Imperial Winter Series 2008/2009

A lively last race in the series with almost Spring like weather and little wind saw aggressive riding by Imperial RT riders who had a plan to elevate Stoyko Bussarov to 3rd cat to join his team mates. They worked hard, all three Imperial riders Dave Ryan, Tom Smith and Stoyko leading the attacks but unfortunately the main group were wise to their efforts and neutralised their attempts. From these efforts three riders did ease off the front - Vincent Leon (Twickenham CC), Martin Sigrist (Newbury RC) and Peter Hedger (Sotonia CC) but after 4km at the front they too were pulled back . This was quickly followed by a concerted loan effort by James Curry (British Airways CC) which looked more promising but again he was caught by the main group and then promptly blew up! With just 5km to go the pace was upped again by Martin Sigrist and Dave Ryan with Stoyko Bussarov tagging on but this too was snuffed out. On the last lap there was a crash which split the group leaving the result to a group finish with Jai Watson (Dulwich Paragon CC) and Adam White (Reading CC) heading for the line together. The tactical knowledge of Jai Watson ultimately got the better of Adam White with Hamilton Lacey taking 3rd position. Dave Ryan (Imperial RT) won the 4th cat Series having finished highest in the most races without winning a race. Generally the racing was of a high standard with the riders gaining confidence and ability as the series progressed.

We plan a slight rearrangement of the programme for next season to increase the distance which will benefit them all for going on the road.

E123

Although the top 3 overall results were already decided there was still plenty to play for. The first 5km were manic, the weather almost perfect with little wind which accounted for the speed and almost certainly meant that it would probably end in a large group finish. Daniel Rudd (Arctic) and Russell Painter (Norwood Paragon CC) were the prime movers in causing the manic start with Sam Humpheson (London Dynamo) and Chris McNamara (Team Corley) also contributing to the anxiety of the main group. Phil Dixon (Science in Sport) down from British Cycling duties in Manchester was also very active and moved to the front with Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) and Tom Sutherland (Twickenham CC) and at 25km it looked very promising. Matt Carden (Team Quest) also joined the group with Angus McAlister (Norwood Paragon CC) and it looked as if Angus was going to ride off solo at any time. Chris McNamara also got across but the main group were not to be deterred and clawed their way back bringing them all together for the final run in. The closing stages were very nervy and the inevitable happened with 800m to go; a crash on the back straight causing total disruption. Paul Alderson (South Western RC) was down but quickly up again; not so fortunate were Richard Black (Dulwich Paragon) and a rider from Norwood Paragon CC. As befits any final stage the sprint was furious with Jo Skelton holding off track specialist and road sprinter Daniel Rudd with a spirited finish by Chris McNamara for 3rd place. Both riders and officials were concerned for the crashed riders but fortunately after treatment from first aider Alison Grant all were back on their feet.

Imperial Winter Series 2008/2009

Over the series the overall results were just, with the strongest and most consistent riders taking the top places; however, Martin Dawkins was one who rose above and his 5th place overall was an exceptional effort and has been awarded a special prize. The strongest of all the riders was Rudie Marais (Archer RC) and for all his efforts was awarded the Doug Collins Most Combative Rider prize although everyone who rode through the 08/09 winter deserves special praise.

The series ended on a high with the prize presentation and draw with guest of honour Daniel Lloyd (pro with Cervélo Test Team) and honorary member of Imperial RT back from his team’s triumph in Qatar. Doug Collins did the intro and wished Daniel all the best for the season and then thanked everyone for their support through the coldest winter for years but all in all it has been fabulous series with brilliant racing with the photo finish helping to produce the results both quickly and accurately. He praised Richard and Lucy Collins for their supreme efforts in organising the series and Alison Grant (Sam Grant’s (WDMCC) mother) for her knowledge and concern for all the crash victims. The Collins’ kids Harry, Tom and at times Isabel for their tea and flapjacks when it was most needed in the bitter cold and for Harry who managed 20 cups of tea from 1 tea bag! And for all the youngsters who helped with the lap boards, bell and finishing flag. The race draw was made and proved very popular with riders and spectators alike with vouchers provided by Sigma Sport and books purchased from Sport & Publicity. To end a group photo was taken by the many photographers there with the pride of place going to the podium winners with their flowers, champagne, cash and Winner’s vase, with everyone leaving with a smile and contended mood, looking forward to the road season and for December 5th for the start of the Imperial Winter Series 2009/2010!

Walk-on Walters

photo Winner Jerone Walters, 2nd Chris Moores, 3rd Paul Alderson

Wow, that was 13 races done and dusted before we even knew it. And when the dust, or rather snow, ice and rain, had settled it was Sigma Sport teamster Jerone Walters sporting the biggest smile, a worthy victor of the E123 series. And shockingly there was home team win in the Category 4s, with Imperial Racing Team’s own Dave Ryan tying up what was this year a very competitive field.

We’re very pleased to say we saw just over 300 riders sign on this year, making up over 1000 individual race entries for the series. And it was a series that again managed to avoid any race cancellations, despite even the snow. We were delighted too when mid-series we upgraded the event from C+ to National B, meaning more points for those hungrily chasing them down, ready for the summer season. What with the introduction of specialist video equipment for the finish we hope you’ll agree the event did get measurably more professional again this season.

It has to be said the 4th cats were a revelation. You guys had certainly done your homework, for the standard of riding (and tactics) was very high. And our apologies here must go to any of the huge entry that made week one and who must have been put off by the seriously big field and high standards they met. Do come back again and let it be said if you do keep coming then you do settle in, it does get easier. But it’s never actually easy, of course.

photo racing with the 4th cats

We were pleased too to see such diversity in the entries. Sixty year olds rode side by side with teenagers, and of course quite a few of those older guys taught the whippersnappers a trick or two. And again the racers were truly international – you only have to read the results – and we were delighted to receive raiding parties from the North too.

A special word here for Rudie Marais, winner of Doug Collins’s Most Combative Rider award. Rudie really took on so many of the E123 races, forming breakaways, or pulling them back, and always-always attacking. Rudie made 10th in the series and maybe if he chose alternative tactics he might have scored higher – but would we have been so entertained? Probably not – a crowd pleaser is Rudie.

photo Rudie Marais

And finally, again well done to the winners. Jerone Walters (36) came new into the series and made it his own. While Paul Alderson (40), another newcomer and Cat 2, by stealing the final podium position showed that even in the cut and thrust of circuit racing age (and experience, clearly) can count for a lot. To Chris Moores (a mere youth at 26) it was 2nd again for the second year running. But Chris is a stylish and capable rider, maybe next year will be his.

To all of you who came along, again a very big thank you, we enjoyed your company, your spirit and your efforts. We hope you enjoyed yourselves too and go on to have a great summer of racing. And when it gets cold and dark at the end of the year, you’ll know where to come.
See you next series!

Imperial Winter Series 2008/2009

4th
After 5 days of atrocious weather the Saturday morning inspection confirmed that the circuit had survived the week! In the end a fine afternoon prevailed albeit with a nagging north westerly wind. Another £10 prime was offered by Stuart Stow and was comfortably taken by David Fong after 20 minutes. Everyone that has taken part in this race has enjoyed the experience and have been appreciative of the chance to start racing amongst their equals; all have tried really hard to make a good race and many have achieved their 3rd Category licence.
It was heartening to see Imperial RT’s riders at the fore for most of the race with a resurgent Tom Smith and team mate Dave Ryan riding very strongly; they both look promising for the coming season.
Although there were several attempts to break away it finally came down to a group sprint; but such was the run-in speed that many riders drifted backwards in the end and it was a good a win for Malcolm Dixon (Dulwich Paragon CC) from Marco Stichini and consistent Peter Hedger (Sotonia CC). The racing has continued to improve week on week.

E123
On the penultimate race of the series a healthy field of 62 riders signed on; the circuit remained dry but with a nagging head wind up the finishing straight slightly compensated for by bright sunshine and temperature of 4 degrees. There were several comments on the standard of riding which will have to be addressed; whereas the 4th cat riding has improved, the Elite racing has somehow lapsed?
In the event Sigma turned up in force to add additional weight and defend Jerone Walters’ overall lead and with Chris Moores on other duties it made the task simpler. It started as usual fast and furious with last week’s winner Angus Macalister (Norwood Paragon) taking the initiative joined by Harry Bulstrode (Thames Velo) and his team mate Ian Lowe together Peter Jones (Hillingdon CC) back from sunny Turkey! It looked promising as the gap opened but it spurred the main group into action with Vince Halpern (AWCycles) doing hard turns on and off the front, joined by team mate and late arrival Tom Smith. Also prominent was new Artic signing Daniel Rudd and as usual a busy and bustling Rudie Marias. Andy Betts (Sigma Sport) was working very hard for Jerone, an unusual role for him but one he will have to get used to in the future!
After a short lull and finally after 42 km on the northern straight Jerone rode through on the right, a gap was opened and only Angus saw the danger and got across to him and with a concerted effort opened a massive gap. The Sigma Sport trap had worked and there was no way they were going to be bought back, in the run into the line Jerone was assured of the overall victory and sportingly pushed Angus across the line as winner. They really both deserved the victory for their outstanding performance. Felix English (Team Corridori) confirmed his good form and sprinting powers to take 3rd place on super sprinter Tom Smith (AWCycles). Jerone Walters now has a lead of 220 points over Chris Moores and cannot be beaten in the series.
It is hoped that all riders will be able to attend the presentation on Saturday and with team commitments permitting Cervelo Test Team’s Daniel Lloyd will hand out the prizes.

4th
There were only going to be two winners in the 4th cat race; a very strong south-easterly wind (which most riders were unsure of how to combat it) and the rider 1st across the line! A £10 prime was donated by Stuart Stow (now back to racing after 15 years, originally with Feltham RC) to be fought out after 20 minutes. It was taken by the strong man of the race, a very determined Tom Sutherland (Twickenham CC). The wind continued to play havoc with many riders caught out as gaps opened followed by the inevitable drifting backwards. Hopefully riding in these conditions should be a learning curve for these riders - stay close to the front to avoid being caught out at the back when gaps open and reduce the risk of being dropped. Finally it came down to a sprint for the line and it again went to Prime winner Tom Sutherland from Peter Hedger (Sotonia CC) and Justin Webb (London Dynamos). Tom Sutherland’s transition from rowing to cycling is now well established and with his 3rd Category licence achieved his progress in Elite racing will be watched with interest.

E123
As in the previous race the wind had the same effect on the much more experienced riders, perhaps even more so because of the speed, particularly in the first few laps. The back straight caused all of the problems where the whole of the field was lined out and all it needed was a gap to appear towards the end of the line and a dozen or so riders were left stranded. It was a true test and a classic road race situation from the start. The action started after 4 km with Angus Macalister (Norwood Paragon) taking off with Team Corridori Junior rider Felix English. The pair ploughed along for a further 5km before Felix English fell back leaving Angus out on his own. A difficult position for him as a team mate of overall contender Chris Moores was left in the main group, now down to 35 riders with a second group of 12 slipping further behind.
There were accusations of poor riding with gaps appearing and not being closed but it happens when it’s windy and positioning is all important. Ian Lowe (Thames Velo) and Richard Moose (Beyond Mountain Bikes) moved off the front but could not sustain their initial effort and slipped back. While all this was happening ex-rower Angus Macalister was steadily pulling away and his progress was startling. He rode through the second group with ease and then caught the main group after 40 km and rode passed them too! Michael Hill and Matt Carden (Team Quest) did try really hard to keep it together in such conditions. In the final stages Chris Moores and Toby Meadows (Team Corriori) (in his last ride before going to Belgium for the race season) had eased themselves from the main group with 8 km to go and although they worked well together and stayed on the same lap as the lone leader they were some 55 seconds down. Angus got a rousing applause from the spectators at the finish which was fully deserved for a brilliant outstanding ride, particularly as he had had a difficult ride the previous week finishing in the 13th place. What a difference a week makes. He contributes his success to night riding in Richmond Park and hard spinning sessions.

Toby Meadows sportingly allowed Chris Moores to take second place. The main group was lead in by Joshua Cunningham (In Gear Dev Squad/OneLife) from Junior rider Al Murson (Glenedene CC). Last weeks 4th cat winner James Lowden (Lewes Wanderers) adjusted well and finished a credible 11th. Unlucky Martin Dawkins’s chain broke with 2 km to go. Toby Meadows thanked Imperial Racing Team for the Series and in turn we all wish him well for the season. Another rider looking forward to racing in Belgium for his 2nd year is Tom Snape who found the race ideal preparation for the type of racing they will experience over there.

And finally, Doug Collins spoke to Angus Macalister on Sunday night who said that on he was riding round Richmond Park that day having to push his lowest gear to get round; he had given his all on Saturday and looks forward to the two final races to assess his form. Chris Moores for all his efforts is still only 70 points adrift from Jerone Walters; perhaps Norwood Paragon will now have time to reflect on their team tactics before the final two races.

E123
A fine sunny afternoon with little wind but still rather chilly. A circuit inspection was required with ice and mud in some places but the problem was overcome and the affected areas were coned off as in the previous races of the day. The racing seems to get faster and faster each week, and today’s race was no exception with several riders going off the back right from the start. The Sigma Sport Elite team were there in strength to safeguard Jerone Walters’ overall lead; Steve Golla (Sigma Sport) played a very important part in the race development, his pure strength at the front was very noticeable powering the main group along when danger riders were creeping off the front. There were several other attempts to break clear with riders going off the front in dribs and drabs. Again Rudie Marias (Private member his new team) always in the thick of it. Finally from nowhere Vince Halpern (AW.cycles) opened a small gap after 35 km and riding alone for 1 km was joined by a powerful looking group of 15 riders thus making 16 at the front. The main group did not surrender and efforts by a number riders kept it moving but the size and strength of the breakaway group told, and in the end they had pulled away to a 50 second advantage. Just as everyone thought that this leading group would battle out the finish Jerone Walters and Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) detached themselves from the group.
Credit to Chris Moores, who suffering from a cold, did well to hang onto Jerone’s wheel and with both riders working well together they eased to a 30 second lead with only 8 km to go. Steve Golla controlled the chase, however, Will Fox (Banbury Star) slipped away and looked most impressive, in the end Chris give best to Jerone in the run in to the line. Will Fox finished a creditable 3rd with Steve Golla leading the remander of the group in. There were two notable outstanding rides from Junior riders in the leading group, a local boy Martin Dawkins (Team Quest) who finished 6th and Conor Dunne (Hemel Hempstead) in 12th. Jo Skelton lead the main group in some 65 seconds down, a truly fascinating race to watch.
Jerone now leads Chris by 240 points.

Imperial Winter Series 2008/2009
Saturday’s race saw a further improvement in the standard of riding and an increase in the race speed with frequent attacks and general chasing down of breakaway riders;after 10km three riders escaped from the main group, Phil Wege (Amersham RCC), James Lowden (Lewes Wanderers) Roger Fowkes (Hillingdon Triathletes) gap looked more than promising but in the end the power and determination of the main group brought it all back together. The sprint to the chequered flag was a bit nervy but everyone held their line resulting in a very close finish with Tom Sutherland (Twickenham CC) just being edged out by the sheer finishing strength of James Lowden who will be more than capable of holding his own in the Elite class. All in all, a good race to watch for the enthusiastic onlookers.

Race 9 Saturday 17th January 2009

Imperial Winter Series 2008/2009

4th cats
Surprisingly a smaller field today lined up for the start than for the freezing artic conditions of last weeks race. Although a strong southerly wind provided a different challenge down the back straight, although helping the riders up the drag to the finish.
The wind was not a deterrent to Martin Sigrist (Newbury RC) who attacked from the gun and quickly gained a gap that at one point was in excess of 30 seconds, and he continued to look smooth and strong as he led for over half the distance. Eventually the bunch woke up, however, and within a few laps his lead was reduced to a few seconds and he was swept up by the bunch half a lap later.
Several more abortive individual attacks were launched from the bunch, but without the safety of numbers they were soon brought back as they entered the headwind into the back straight.
A bunch sprint saw Antony Leeson (Addiscombe CC) take the honours on the line from Charlie Pearch (London Dynamo/Cyclefit).

E123
A strong field with both contenders for the overall bringing along support started as the wind grew stronger and the temperature started to drop. The race however was fast from the beginning with 2nd overall in the series, Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) launching an early attack with series leader Jerone Walters and team mate Steve Golla (Sigma Sport) being attentive, the move was brought back. A counter move was quickly launched by Rudie Marais and the favourites quickly moved to join him, with both Chris and Jerone Walters having support in the shape of Steve Golla and Chris' brother Ben, along with Paul Alderson (South Western RC) and Ashley Holding (Wild Side 707 RT – first time out in renamed club and kit). With Norwood Paragon, perhaps mistakenly, disrupting any chases the break soon grew to over a minute, although Rudie, paying the price for his initial efforts was discarded as a result. Ben Moores was struggling to contribute to the break and eventually succumbed to the pace of the move as Paul Alderson launched a purposeful attack that caught the rest of his companions by surprise only to be brought back by a hard chasing Chris Moores. The bunch continued, a by now futile chase with Rudie having recovered and Richard Collins (Imperial Racing Team) trying to get off the front.
As the line loomed the superiority of Sigma Sport's numbers bore fruit as Steve Golla appeared several seconds ahead of the rest of the group to be followed home by Jerone, extending his series lead by edging out Chris Moores for second. The bunch stayed together for a fast wind assisted sprint 1 min 32 secs later with Jo Skelton leading them home and Andy Fowkes (Thames Velo) winning the 3rd cat race.

Imperial Winter Series 2008/2009

4th cat
After clearing the circuit of a light covering of snow and then salting a few bad patches led to a slight delay in the start time for when 38 riders lined up for the race. They all rode very sensibly with no incidents, the pace again improves week on week along with the general standard of bike handling. Although several efforts were made during the race to open a gap from the main group nothing happened and in the end it came down to a mass charge for the finishing line with Robert Moore (London Phoenix CC) winning by 5 lengths from George Edwards (Kingston Wheelers CC). It was an impressive effort, however, the outcome perhaps would have been slightly different if Dave Ryan (Imperial Racing Team) and Micheal Widera (Hounslow Wheelers) who had prized themselves off the front with 2 km to go but unfortunately were caught in the run in. They both deserved more and again is a reflection of the standard and ability of the 4th cats to be aware of all such moves and generally the whole 4th cat racing keeps on improving and all riders can look forward to a season of racing on the circuit and road.

E123
A decision was made at the start to reduce the distance of the race to 50 minutes plus 5 laps; not really for the riders sake but mainly for the officials who had suffered the artic conditions during the 4th and Youth races. The circuit condition was improving but it was still bitterly cold.

Many riders who reached the circuit were bewildered by the conditions having arrived from less artic areas of the country. The non slip surface with salt in the icy places proved a great test and made racing safe with speeds as for normal conditions. A credit to the bike handling skills and courage of all the riders that took part. Rudie Marias again made a predigous effort from the start and opened up a huge gap after 2km; he was caught after a frantic chase and almost immediately 3 riders detached themselves from the main the group opening a similar gap. Russell Painter (Norwood Paragon), Paul Alderson (South Western RC) and with new racer Nigel Atkins (Twickenham CC) pulling really hard it looked very promising but finally after some really hard turns by the main group with the Moores brothers (Norwood Parargon CC), Rudie, Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) and Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla) they were caught. Rudie Marias went again and opened another gap. Nigel Atkins also tried again, he is almost as equally as strong as Rudie, if only they could contain their effort and get together later in the series they could be a winning duo.

Paul Alderson was also part of the move but as before with the Moores brothers and Jerone Walters becoming very vigilant and closing everything down. The speed up to the finishing straight was quite amazing considering the snow on the top bend. With just 5km the most serious effort was made and should have been a winning move with one of last years stars Steve Golla (Sigma Sport) finding his winter legs and team mate Jerone along with Jake Butler (In Gear Development Squad/OneLife) opening a gap but such was the speed of the main group again with Moores brothers working like Trojans were pulled back together. Another hectic charge for the finishing line with thankfully nearly everyone holding their line saw the strength and class of non sprinter Jerone desperately holding off Chris Moores on the line, with new comer Joshua Cunningham (In Gear Development Squad/OneLife) holding on to take 3rd place. In the circumstances every rider deserved credit for just riding in perhaps the most servere conditions for a winter series race in the 11 years it has been running.

Jerone leads Chris in the Imperial Winter Series by just 150 points.

Race 7 Saturday 3rd January 2009

E123
Although slightly warmer than for the 4th Cat Race, the temperature was only just above freezing with the sun fading fast. Tony Gibb (Plowman Craven Madison) turned up to race again (to check his winter legs) but was unhappy with some of the riding having to ride on the grass to avoid the only incident of the afternoon. There were many attacks from the start with Rudie Marias (Norwood Paragon CC) yet again being joined by James Leach (Twickenham CC) from lap 1; really only an attempt to drag the field out. Tony Gibb was also fairly active in the early stages of the race but it seemed only for the shear hell of it. Rudie tried again by attacking and splitting the field, a great pity that he does not preserve his strength for the effort in the latter stages of the race. There were several groups that moved clear of the main field but such was the speed their efforts were short lived. Most of the main contenders were in each of the groups and at one time three Team Quest riders were driving at the front and established a 10 second lead after 25km. Ed Summerwell, Michael Hill and Bill Butterworth (all Team Quest) with the Moores brothers (Norwood Paragon) crossing to it; however, the group was too big and was swallowed up by the main field. Again, because many of the main contenders namely Paul Alderson (South Western RC), Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) and Tony Gibb were left to close the gap, but as so often happens after a coming together and a lull a group of six slipped off the front with 12km to go. Amazingly both the Moores brothers were there again with Academy Junior Toby Meadows (Team Corridori ) looking surprisingly fit with ace veteran Ashley Holding (Wild Side RT) and ever consistent Jerone Walters. The main group did make some half hearted attempts to close the gap with Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla), Rudie and Paul Alderson trying really hard but their efforts were not consistent and with the crash 3 laps to go it totally disorganised the race and the breakaway steadily pulled away and with each of their efforts it meant that everyone had an even chance for the line. Meadows got the jump on the rest but Chris Moores got very close on the line, a truly a great finish with Jerone Walters 3rd and fast improving Harry Bulstrode (Thames Velo) in 4th, Ashley Holding in 5th and Ben Moores, who worked so hard for Chris in the break, finished a few seconds later in 6th place. Henry Furniss again showed his frustration with the main group (his should have been in the break) to leave them in the last 1 km to finish alone in 7th place and Rudie showed an exceptional burst of speed to lead the main group in.
All in all a fascinating race worthy of its National B rating with Toby Meadows not in overall contention Chris Moores scores the maximum 200 series points and closes the gap on Jerone Walters.

4th cat
Brilliantly sunny but only just above freezing and an increased entry after the Christmas racing saw an eager field ready to race. A lack of wind saw a very much increased pace in the main group; as the weeks go on it has been good to see the 4th cat riders becoming more confident with far better bike handling and in particular to the difficult run in to the finish. Although only his second proper race Miles Stovold (Dulwich Paragon) showed his strength not only to win but to get back into the main group after a gear adjustment early in the race. He beat Clive Jarvis (CC Basingstoke) to the line with Junior Gavin Mitchell (Twickenham CC) showing his track craft to take 3rd place. A good encouraging race; long may it continue in the future to boost more Sportif riders into Road Racing.

Race 6 Thursday 1st January 2009

E123 Cloudy very cold and a little wind. An exceptionally fast start with Dave McMullen (Evans Cycles) opening a 15 second gap on the first lap but he was very quickly reeled in when the race settled down. Tony Gibbs’s (Plowman Craven Madison) presence had little effect after his New Year’s celebrations. James Leach (Twickenham CC) and Rudie Marias (Norwood Paragon CC) again eased off the front and this stirred the main group into action with Ed Summerwell (Team Quest) going across to join them making a very useful group but they were finally brought back.
The next group to attempt to break away included Kevin Ibbetson (Fietsen Tempo), Jason Humphries (Norwood Paragon CC), Joshua Worrell (Twickenham CC), Michael Hill (Team Quest), Matthew Carden (Team Quest) and Henry Sleight (Loughborough Students CC) but they were also pulled back. Again Rudie Marias moved forward which looked to be a very useful move but with Paul Alderson (South Western RC), Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport), Paul Delahunty (London Dynamo/Cyclefit) and Felix English (Team Corridori) left in the main group pulling hard it was always going to be difficult to maintain the gap. Rudie found the effort to attack again and this time Jo Skelton reacted but after 30km it was just too much. However, finally a group did detach itself with 10km to go with Rudie, Jez Cox(Bike & Run), Dave McMullen and Henry Sleight which was a very similar pattern to the previous race and although they worked well together with all doing hard turns they really did not deserve to be caught with half a lap to go and this left a manic charge to the line.
Jerone Walters seemed to come from nowhere to challenge Jo Skelton but he just held on to take the victory with a fast improving Jason Humphries in 3rd. Jerone Walters is talking about going to Hog Hill for harder racing but perhaps after sampling Hog Hill 30 times he may return to the ease of the Hillingdon circuit and an overall win in the Imperial Winter Series.

4th cat Only one worthwhile attack by Miles Stovold (Dulwich Paragon CC), a first time racer who opened up a substantial gap after 14km of the 20km race but unfortunately he timed his effort a little too early and was caught with 2km to go. This lead to the whole main group sprinting for the places with James Gregg (Behind the Bike Shed) producing a very strong finish to win with Jai Watson (Dulwich Paragon CC) second and Clive Jarvis (CC Basingstoke) in third place.

E123
A good class entry and from the start the attacks started; lead again by Rudie Marias (Norwood Paragon) with Bill Butterworth (Team Quest), Des Gaylor (Kenton RC), Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) and Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) also very active at the front. It stirred the field into action on a very hard day again and with the wind playing a part were pulled back. Then the pattern of the race was set with Edward Summerwell (Team Quest) breaking away with Rudie Marias again playing a leading roll but with youth rider Josh Papworth (Wyre Forest) bridging the gap. Martin Dawkins (Team Quest) and Joshua Worrell (Twickenham CC) tried really hard to cross the gap; Rudie Marias finally cracked leaving Ed Summerwell and Josh Papworth in the front. With 3 km to go Josh made his move, it was quite nail biting with a 15 year old youth holding off a charging group with Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla), doing most of the serious chasing (he crossed the line in frustration). In the end a brilliant ride by Josh Papworth to hold on to win alone, it was indeed a marvellous effort which lifted the gloom and cold of the circuit and he was awarded ‘Man’ of the race – the wine being presented to his father, who was rightly very proud of his son’s efforts. Chris Moores lead the chasing group in to claim 2nd place and the 200 series points with two fine performances in the last 1km from Joe Skelton and Martin Dawkins.

4th cats
On a bitterly cold day when even the polar bears huddled together for warmth produced a far more disciplined race than Boxing Day, again the wind playing a decisive part; blowing easterly across the circuit. Mark Edwards (Hillingdon Triathletes) produced an outstanding ride to break away on his own with 9km to go holding off the chasing bunch. Only in the last lap was there a slight chance of him being caught and he crossed the line on his own for a worthy win. Dave Ryan (Imperial RT) rode cleverly and showed his strength in the run in to take second place from Andrew Britz (London Dynamo) leading the remaining finishers in.

Race 4 Friday 26th December 2008

E123
An excellent entry and all riders seemed eager to start the race. Unwisely Rudie Marias (Norwood Paragon) attacked from the start and rode several laps on his own. The wind was going to make racing and attacking extremely difficult; however, there were plenty that tried, namely Bill Butterworth (Team Quest), Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) and Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport). Finally a group of four formed at the front with Chris Moores, Jerone Walters, Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla) and Alexander King (GWR Team) and this set the pattern of the race. Will Fox (Banbury Star) almost got to them but with no help he went back to the shelter of the chasing group of Felix English (Team Corridori), Paul Alderson (South Western RC) and Michael Hill (Team Quest) and Rudie Marias; who was to disappear leaving the three chasing. They made little impression on the leading group; Michael Hill seemed particularly strong but his efforts were to no avail. It was a desperate finish with Chris Moores just holding off Jerone Walters with Henry Furniss and Alex King some lengths back; perhaps they worked too hard? The chasing trio were lead in by Felix English with Jason Streather (VC St Raphael) leading the main group home. It now looks as if the battle for overall runners are between Jerone Walters and Chris Moores. Chris with his brother Ben to help and a very strong Norwwod Paragon team looks to be in a favourable position.

4th cat
Smaller field as would be expected the day after Christmas but still healthy nevertheless; in spite of a bitterly cold strong wind but fortunately dry and sunny. It was hard for a 4th Cat race with everyone staying together in spite of a few half hearted attacks. The finish was very disappointing with extremely bad riding, a crash sending two riders to hospital. Some good, however, came from the race in that a doctor was in the race and was on hand for advice. The crash some what affected the result; however; it was a worthy win for Mark Ottaway (VC Meudon) from Jonathan Wale (Amersham RCC).

Race 3 Saturday 20th December 2008

Merry Chritmas from Imperial Racing Team, we hope you get the bike you wanted

Man of Race : Nigel Atkins - Twickenham CC

E123
Again the E123 race was a fine example of road racing with many attacks from the start and as usual both of the earlier attacks were pulled back by a vigilant main group. After 35km a group of four went clear and were joined later by a further four. Two Twickenham CC riders Joshua Worrell and Nigel Atkins were in that group. Both Jason Streather (VC St Raphael) and Rudie Marias (Norwood Paragon) missed the move, the breakway of 8 worked well and open a huge gap with Nigel Atkins charging from the front. The main group were not idle with some huge turns by Jason Streather, Paul Delahunty (London Dynamo) and Vince Halpern (AWcycles) but the gap remained the same. Only Paul Alderson (South Western RC) managed to get clear and looked as if he may bridge the gap but in the end his efforts were to no avail. In the lead group Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) and Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) pulled away and left the other six floundering. These two rode brilliantly and were never likely to be challenged and in the run to the line Chris got the better of Jerone. In all a brilliant race and following his 4th cat win the previous week Nigel Atkins won the Man of the Race award, his efforts in the breakaway were appreciated but on reflection he probably worked slightly too hard and when the group split he could not go with them, his previous efforts taking their toll.

The overall series is now lead by Jerone Walters with 350 points and the holiday period should establish the main contenders for the overall placings.

4th Cats
The 3rd race of the winter series was run off in far better conditions than race 2, however, the wind played the biggest part in the results. The 4th Cat started with many attacks and finally a break of two went clear Michael Corke (London Dynamo) and Roger Fowkes (Hillingdon Triathletes) from out of the main group riding strongly as establishing a healthy lead. James Stuart (Redhill) chased hard, timing his effort to perfection, catching the leaders in the run up to the finish line and winning comfortably.

Race 2 Saturday 13th December 2008

Man of Race : Paul Anderson - South Western RC

A much reduced field lined up for the start in atrocious weather. Continuing on from the start last weeks Man of the Race Rudie Marias (Norwood Paragon CC) attacked but with a slightly reduced distance no one was going to let him ride away. Bill Butterworth (Team Quest) and former overall winner Jason Streather (VC St Raphael) were also very active. Several other attacks were made notably from Edward Summerwell (Team Quest) all the way from Exeter but all to no avail until Joshua Worrall (Twickenham CC) went on his own. It was a brave attempt and looked as if he may have stayed away but some very strong riding into the wind in the back straight by Jason Streather, Rudie Marais and Steve Legg (RT316-Crown Lifts) pulled him back. Finally a TT specialist Paul Alderson (South Western RC ) back after several years went alone, his TT experience saw him stay away to the finish and an equally a brilliant effort by local Junior rider Martin Dawkins (Team Quest) held off Jason Humphries (Norwood Paragon CC ) for 3rd Place. Edward Summerwell lead the main group in some 55 seconds down with Jason Streather beating other fast finisher Vince Halpern (AWcycles) into 5th place. The award for Man of the Race went to Paul Alderson but Martin Dawkins’ effort ran him very close.

Series leaders Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) and Paul Alderson (South Western RC) are equal with 200 points with Rudie Marais in 3rd with 190 points

After a few attempts a break away of three riders were formed after 5 km and working well together they were never likely to be caught. The strength of ex rower and newcomer to cycle racing Nigel Atkins (Twickenham CC) finally got the better of his two breakway companions to win by several lengths. It was a great result for Stoyko Bussarov (Imperial Racing Team) who has been trying all season for those illusive BC points with a fine 3rd place with Murdo Jamieson (Kingston Wheelers CC). Credit to all the finishers who made a race of it and chased hard to the finish in dreadful weather conditions.

Imperial Winter Series 2008/2009

Man of Race : Rudie Marias - Norwood Paragon CC

With the weather being so good, bright sun and a windless day, brought out some of the best riders in London and the South East. Last years winner Paul Pickup was absent but second overall last year Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) was back to try and improve on his position and he was one of the early attackers in a field of 68 starters for the 52km race.

Little groups of riders were attacking throughout the race, however, in the early stages the main group were very vigilant and most were brought back. Rudie Marias (Norwood Paragon) appears to be in great form and was at the head of the race throughout; when the final selection of 8 riders went clear with 18k to go Rudie was the driving force in the group and in the dash to the line only Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) got the better of him. Rudie was voted the ‘Man of the Race’ and will be presented with his prize before the race on 13th December.

A huge entry in the 4th cat race was most encouraging with over 75 riders signing on to race. Before the start they were all warned to race responsibly as for many it was their first taste of racing in a group. Over the 20 km of racing there were many attacks with the field gradually splitting with the surges in speed. In the run in 38 riders contested the sprint with podium places going to Harry Littlechild (London Dynamo) taking the verdict from Andrew Colsell (High Wycombe CC) and Tom Sutherland (Twickenham CC).

This was an excellent start to the series and we hope that the thought of Christmas shopping will keep everyone coming back for more!

Imperial Winter Series 2007/2008

Guys, it’s time to sort out your winter racing gear– and it’s time to re-set your race-faces too – as December 6th sees the Imperial Racing Team’s third Winter Series literally exploding into action. And when we say exploding, believe us, this series is wonderfully competitive. The 2007/8 series was a huge success seeing record entries and a fierce competition for overall honours, eventually won out by Elite rider Paul Pickup. Certainly if you’re looking for a way to spice up an otherwise humdrum winter training programme, then this series will surely do that, and then some. Be ready for battle, that’s all we’ll say for now.

Here are some facts, in case you don’t know: held exclusively at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in West London, this is a 13-round series of closed-circuit road racing for Adult and Youth categories running right through December, January and into February. The racing is split into three separate events. Category 4’s start proceedings at 12:30 with a 35-minutes plus 5 laps race, followed by Youth ABCDE at 13:30 who run a straight 30-minutes. Then the big guns take over, that’s the Elite and Category 1,2 & 3s, at 14:15 for an hour plus 5 laps. The laps aren’t long, the wind always blows you backwards along the main straight and as much it’s discouraged, crashes happen.

Imperial Winter Series 2007/2008

Beginners are welcome, just be ready to pedal like you’ve never done before. Experienced riders are very welcome too – you’ll be surprised at the standard. The host club love their sport, enjoy good-natured competitive riders and with the likes of Doug Collins have the experience to put on a professional event that you’ll be glad to be a part of. There’s a decent prize fund too (ask Paul!). You’ll be surprised too, to find just how international the field is (maybe it’s the London effect). So if you feel keen, if you feel competitive and if you can shrug off the sometimes freezing temperatures like the pro you think you are, then register and race.
