Imperial Winter Series 2011/2012

ON THE TRAIL OF THE AWESOME PINE

London Dymano Jamie Pine dominates the Imperial Winter Series photo Imperial Winter Series 2011/2012 series winner Jamie Pine, 2nd Steve Golla, 3rd Rory Townsend

In the E123 races we have again welcomed old friends and met new ones and are glad that this mix keeps the racing and the series fresh. It was particularly good to see Jamie Pine back for more this year but this time in the E123 series – he won the 3rd cat series 2010/2011– and is now a consistent winner taking 8 of the 12 races. Jamie is a wonderful sprinter and great to see in action.

After the final race of the series, in zero degrees, a large gathering of spectators transferred to the club house for the prize presentation with guest Roger Hammond awarding the prizes. The awards commenced with the 3rd cats culminating in the podium places – 1st and 2nd places finished on equal points – and the contrast between elated winner Peter Hudson and the disappointment of second place Angelo Christides was self-evident. At the end of the day they were only separated by number of wins.

In the E123 series, prizes were awarded to 20th place and the stand out riders made up the top three slots on the podium – Jamie Pine was the clear winner and was joined by Steve Golla and young Rory Townsend. Jamie welcomed his 1st prize of £500 with flowers, champagne, MaxiFuel bag and gels, and said a few words thanking the organisers on behalf of the riders. After a brief intro the award for the Combative rider of the series was presented to Conall Yates for his attacking spirit.

Before the random prize draw Roger took a few questions from the audience; he received a warm reception, his natural modesty and friendliness securing everyone’s attention. He responded in his usual eloquent and measured manner on questions about his pro career and the challenges now facing him. He highlighted the most rewarding aspects; everything coming together perfectly for the Junior Cyclo- Cross World Championships - and the most frustrating, his 3rd place at Paris Roubaix and lost opportunity of a Classics win in Ghent-Wevelgem! Reassuringly he concluded by noting that ‘once a cyclist, always a cyclist’ and hoped to stay in cycling in some form - however, with his wife Kara expecting their first baby in the coming weeks he may not have much time to ponder his future!

Although the Ladies series finished over the Christmas period we would like to mention them again here and thank them for their support.

We are exceptionally grateful again to our sponsors - Henry Furniss and the WyndyMilla team, MaxiFuel, Sigma Sport and SurfPrint - who allow us to provide additional rewards to the riders for their hard efforts and providing the excitement each race.

Thank you for racing with us and we wish you all the best for the 2012 season.

Although the air temperature was hovering around zero degrees it was probably the best afternoon of the series with the sun shining in a beautiful clear sky and little wind.

The early morning freezing temperatures slowed the sign on but eventually a strong field started both races – 43 for the 4th cat and 55 for the 3rds. In the 4th cat race both Marcel Louw and Huw Jones made an effort off the front but in the end it came down to a very full on sprint with Chris King (Catford CC) holding off Richard Bradfield (Dulwich Paragon CC) with Graeme York (Twickenham CC) in 3rd place with his team mate George Kirkin getting his first points in 6th place. The random prize is awarded to 23rd place finisher David Morgan (Charlotteville CC) who will ‘go faster’ courtesy of a WyndyMilla cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre.

The 3rd cat race took a similar pattern although somewhat faster with Josh Lawless and James Walker (High Wycombe CC RT) making a significant effort to break clear. With 200 m to go it was going to be a very tight finish but Nick Noble took the verdict from Ben Sumner (Beeline Bikes) with Ashley Dennis (Prestige VC) in 3rd.

In the E123 race, a slightly smaller field than usual started, perhaps as the overall places were mostly settled with little change likely? However, from the start Jamie Pine (London Dynamo) stretched his legs for 2 laps, followed by Steve Golla (High Wycombe CC RT); both looked determined to try and stay away for the whole race. Next to try was Conall Yates (InGear Quickvit RT) but Ben and Chris Moores were determined to keep things together and worked hard to bring them back. With 20 km to go in-form Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers), John Veness (Handsling Racing) and talented junior Rory Townsend (Prestige VC) opened a gap of 15 seconds. Townsend was determined to finish in the top ten in every race but Pine and Golla had other ideas and they all re-joined with 8 km to go. Golla took another flyer in the final laps but the field were wise to the move and closed him down very quickly. Overall leader Pine stamped his authority on the series with another fine win, his 8th of the 12 race series. Clearly saving his best till last Rudie Marias celebrated his birthday with a fine 2nd place! Tom Smith produced another strong sprint holding off mate Vince Halpern (Handsling Racing) and Yates.

As soon as the last race was over, the large gathering of spectators transferred to the club house for the prize presentation with guest Roger Hammond awarding the prizes.

The series concluded with Pine a runaway winner with 1990 points from Golla on 1400 and a magnificent consistent effort by junior rider Townsend on 1190 making his family and friends very proud of him.

Race 11 Saturday 4th February 2012

On a bitterly cold afternoon with snow clouds threatening, a fair entry braved the conditions with both 3rd and 4th cat groups seemingly content to stay in the confines of the bunch.

Luke Farren (Brighton Mitre) just managed to hold off Graeme York (Twickenham CC) to win the 4th cat race with Jonathan Rogers (Kingston Wheelers CC) in 3rd. The random prize is awarded to 8th place finisher Jon Train (GS Gazzetta) who will ‘go faster’ courtesy of a WyndyMilla cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre.

Werner Van Der Merwe (MarathonMTB) struck out on his own mid race and although none of the other 3rds seemed interested in pursuing he was soon drawn back into the group. Matthew Bone (I-Team) made a late surge to win and having recently moved up from the 4th cat races (by winning the 8th race of the series) looks like a talent for the future having only started racing last August! Corrine Hall (Node 4 Giordana Womens Team) ex-national champion was also making a comeback after a fall on her mountain bike back in September, a brave effort considering the day, she was riding exceptionally well and attacked towards the end no doubt encouraged by her team mate and coach Stuart Blunt (Team Corridori). Maxifuel’s Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles are won this week by Vaughan Luff.

In the E123 race with the biting wind picking up, the pattern was entirely different from the preceding races with Jerone Walters (VC St Raphael) attacking from the start. Newcomer Richard Horton (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) and Vince Halpern (Handsling Racing) attacked to cross to make a trio but it was short lived. Walters then went again with Conall Yates (InGear Quickvit RT), Jamie Pine (London Dynamo) with Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers) finding his form again after his recent trip to New York. Rory Townsend (Prestige VC) had clearly recovered from his dip in form last week and these five were quickly joined by Steve Golla (High Wycombe RT). The disappearing lead group did not deter junior talent Josh Maynard (Welwyn Wheelers) and Horton from chasing hard to close the gap but they had left it a little too late. The sprint for the podium was almost a forgone conclusion with Pine coming round Walters for a comfortable win with Townsend a strong 3rd followed by Golla and Yates with Holloway in 6th place. Pete Wager (Felt Colbornes RT) salvaged 9th place leading in the main group and is still highly placed overall. The presentation (11th Feb) will be supported by special guest Roger Hammond who raced the winter series in its formative early years. Another happy note was Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes RT) being presented with a baby daughter on Tuesday and this probably accounted for him missing the break!

Race 10 Saturday 28th January 2012

click here to view racing photos in the Imperial Winter Series

A biting northerly wind blowing down the finishing straight made it a difficult day to breakaway, however in the 4th cat race, this did not apply as Ben Sumner (Beelines Bicycles) broke clear with 8 km to go and held off a charging main group; a rare feat! He now moves up to 3rd category racing. The WyndyMilla 4th cat random prize is awarded to 29th place Stuart Smith (High Wycombe CC) who can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

The 3rd cat race followed a similar pattern with James Walker (High Wycombe CC) breaking clear but sadly he was swallowed up before the fast finish with Peter Hudson (Durham Uni) holding off Dominic Clegg (Redhill CC) and Ben Wimpory (Sydenham Wheelers). The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 9th place finisher Rob Sharland (Kingston Wheelers) who receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

From the off Andy Betts (Felt Colbornes RT) was clearly determined to dictate the race initially with Jason Edwards (GB MSTina) and then after another 3km with Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) with Conall Yates (inGear Quickvet RT) and Pete Wager (Felt Colbornes RT) chasing. These all finally came together with Vince Halpern (Handsling Racing) then attacking marked by Steve Legg (Police Sport UK), Ashley Holding (GB MSTina), Edwards and later Rudie Marais (La Fuga/Sigma Sport) and Bill Butterworth (Twickenham CC). Betts, however, was in scintillating form and opened another gap with Moores the only rider that seemed capable of closing the gap. They distanced themselves from the peloton, with the overall contenders apparently content to watch each other, the gap quickly extended to 55 seconds. With a headwind uphill finish it looked like Betts would attack early but they were together in the last 200m with Betts leading out. In the final 50m Moores went to come round him but did not quite have the strength to pass. Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes RT) led the main bunch in for 3rd place holding off overall leader Jamie Pine (London Dynamo), Halpern and Steve Golla (High Wycombe CC).

Race 9 Saturday 21st January 2012

After a lull last week the strong westerly wind returned to play a big part in the 9th race of the winter series.

Despite the conditions several riders had the confidence to force a change in the outcome including noteworthy efforts from Joel Lewis (Kettering CC), Ethan Lee (Solihull CC), George Fox (45 RC) who went alone later in the 40km race as did Peter Mollison (Kingston Wheelers). Lee’s effort was rewarded with a fine 2nd place just being beaten by Stuart Williams (Reading CC) with Jordan O’Neill (unattached) in 3rd. The WyndyMilla 4th cat random prize is awarded to 36th place Adrian Crothall (GS Avanti) who can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

After an early attack from Andrew Harvey (Kingston Wheelers) a group of 9 established themselves mid-way through the 3rd’s race. This group splintered over the last laps with Jack Reder (unattached) beating consistent performer Werner Van Der Merwe (MarathonMTB) with Daniel Stevens (Neon-Digital) in 3rd place followed by Ben Wimpory (Sydenham Wheelers) holding off Angelo Christides and Jason Gardiner (Kingston Wheelers). Second place Werner Van Der Merwe also wins the Maxifuel random prize and receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

The E123 race started off in typically frenetic fashion with the series contenders watching each other and that combined with the wind resulted in a selection of the front group of 9. Only one rider Jerzy Kuzminski (London Phoenix) slipped back, and finally after 25 km the group settled down with both Ben and Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon), Steve Golla (High Wycombe RT), Andy Betts and Tom Smith (both Felt Colbornes RT), Jamie Pine (London Dynamo), Rory Townsend (Prestige VC) and Jason Edwards (GB MSTina) eventually lapping the field. Unfortunately Pete Wager (Felt-Colbornes RT) had mechanical trouble, missed the move and later retired. The peloton comprised riders fighting for a wheel to shelter from the wind and others intent on salvaging the remaining placings; consequently many groups formed particularly George Farrell (Welwyn Wheelers), Harry Franklin (Hargrove Cycles) who finished on their own for 9th and 10th. The next group of 7 was lead in by Vince Halpern (Handsling Racing) pursued by Steve Legg (Police Sport UK) who soloed for the last 8km to finish 18th.

The sprint for 1st place was dominated by in form Pine although Tom Smith attempted to break the pattern with 3 km to go attacking with Chris Moores; Smith recovered to take 2nd holding off Ben Moores a few lengths clear of Golla, Townsend, Betts and Chris Moores with Edwards completing the octet.

Race 8 Saturday 14th January 2012

photo of Racing in the 4th cats

A very cold fine day, with no wind and potentially perfect racing conditions.

Although initially animated by George Fox (45 RC) and Joel Lewis (Kettering CC) it came down to a large group heading for the finish line with Matthew Bone (I Team) crossing the line front of Stephen Ralston (London Dynamo) and Fox. The WyndyMilla 4th cat random prize is awarded to 23rd place Andrew Clare (London Dynamo) who can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

photo of WyndyMilla prize winner Andrew Clare (London Dynamo)

The 3rd cat race was slightly more aggressive with several riders forcing the pace; a number of incidents potentially changed the outcome of the finish especially the last 5 km which was very nervous. The run in produced a clear winner in Peter Hudson (Durham University) from in form Tim Benham (Wyndy Milla), and Angelo Christides with the rest strung out behind. The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 11th place Duncan Rimmer (Morden CRC) who receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

photo of Maxifuel prize winner Duncan Rimmer (Morden CRC)

Fortunately racing rather than crashing has been a consistent feature of the E123 race but even they managed to keep the first aiders busy this week!

After missing out last week Steve Golla (High Wycombe RT) was clearly determined and was attacking from the start along with Conall Yates (InGear Quickvit RT) and Pete Wager (Felt-Colbornes RT). Several riders joined them and formed a larger group but it became fragmented with Peter Cole (Handsling Racing), Matthew Carden (Team Quest) and Wager dropping back leaving a more workable group of 8 with newcomer to the series Liam Stones (Team Corley Cycles) in good company with Yates, Golla, Jamie Pine (London Dynamo) and Nick Baker (Zappis), joined by Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes RT), Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) and Rory Townsend (VC Prestige).

Behind, the main peloton eventually became resigned to the fact the gap was too large although towards the end Wager, Cole, Vince Halpern (Handsling Racing) and Bill Butterworth (Twickenham CC) made determined efforts. With 4 km to go Yates and Townsend attacked, a brilliant move which saw Smith and Moores dig deep to hang on. In the end Pine showed his sprinting speed to hold off a very fast improving Smith from Stones and Golla. Jerone Walters (VC St Raphael) prised himself away from the main group with 3 km to go, perhaps rueing missing the break. Cole led in his team mate Halpern for the main group sprint.

Race 7 Saturday 7th January 2012

click here to view racing photos in the Imperial Winter Series

A fine race day but the blustery wind made it difficult for any advantages to be gained.

After attempts from riders to detach themselves from the front it came down to a fierce sprint with Marc Townsend (Neon-Digital) just holding off Charles Batho (Dulwich Paragon CC) for a fine win with teammate Simon Lewington in 3rd. The WyndyMilla 4th cat random prize is awarded to Andrew Macey (Ashford Wheelers) who can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

Jez McCann (VC Elan) and Werner van der Merwe (MarathonMTB) animated the start of the 3rd cat race followed by Peter Hitt (Mountain Trax RT) and Adam Buckland (Banjocycles). A crash disrupted the last lap but Ashley Dennis (Prestige VC) held off Daniel Stevens (Neon-Digital) and Angelo Christides for a worthy win. The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to Noah Banner (Kingston Wheelers cc) who receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

In the main race Conall Yates (InGear Quickvit RT) and Adam Brittain (High Wycombe CC) kicked off the action soon after the start; a big chase developed lead by ever consistent Andy Betts (Felt Colbornes RT) and Rory Townsend (Prestige VC). Jamie Pine (London Dynamo) attacked, but it all came back together. Bill Butterworth (Twickenham CC) also tried his luck with a lone effort. The fierce pace began to tell with the overall contenders watching each other allowing a select group of 5 to slip away with Betts leading accompanied by Jerone Walters (VC St Raphael), Yates, Pine with Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon). Steve Golla (High Wycombe CC) missed out and realising the danger, did make attempts to cross the gap, without success. With 5 km remaining Betts attacked uphill towards the finish but was countered by Walters and Pine. With 100 m to go, it could have been one of 3 with Moores then Yates slipping back. One the line there were fractions between them with Pine just getting the verdict from Betts and Walters. Andy Brittain meanwhile, presented with an opportunity of a slowing group, broke away in the last few laps and just held onto 6th place. Pete Wager and team mate Tom Smith (Felt-Colbornes RT) led the main group in very closely followed by Townsend and Vince Halpern (Handsling Racing).

Race 6 Saturday 31st December 2011

click here to view racing photos in the Imperial Winter Series

Possibly the last road race in the World in 2011, on a gloomy, mild but breezy day uplifted by a very encouraging entry in all categories after the disappointing Boxing Day entry.

In the 4th cats, the racing is becoming more aggressive with attacks and counter attacks and in particular from Andrew Kennard, Jordan O'Neill and Phil Sowton. Inevitably it came down to a close finish with Karl Moseley (Stourbridge Velo) finally achieving his goal and crossing the line in first place in front of Ben Wimpory (Sydenham Wheelers) and Neil McCann (VC Elan). The WyndyMilla 4th cat random prize is awarded to 12th place finisher Charles Batho (Dulwich Paragon CC) so he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

The 3rd cat race was similarly animated with Dominic Clegg (Redhill CC), James Walker (High Wycombe CC), Nicholas Baker (Zappis CC) and then Rob Sharland (Kingston Wheelers) all trying to force a gap. Next Neil Heffernan (Inverse Racing/Cyclaim) and Jason Gardiner (Kingston Wheelers) tried but the main group was very attentive and was not letting any moves go too far. In the aftermath of a pile up at the end of the back straight 7 riders broke away and opened a decent gap, beyond the grasp of the remaining group. In the run in to the line the lead group disintegrated but Baker, Stephen Morrell (Aylesbury CC) and Dave McMullen (GWR Team) were clearly the strongest. The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 6th place finisher Ian Donohue (Fareham Wheelers) who receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles. WyndyMilla prize winner Charles Batho (Dulwich Paragon CC)

The Women’s race saw a strong field of 26 line up with big teams from both Pearson Cycles and WyndyMilla and although it started relatively calmly continual pressure by the likes of Mathilde Pauls (Pearson CC), Louise Mahè (Mule Bar Girls) and Keria McVitty (Kings Cliffe Flyers) gradually whittled down the main group. In the sprint nobody could top confident Karla Boddy (High Wycombe CC) with Tamina Oliver (Squadra Donne) a fine second and Sarah Brook (Mule Bar Girls) holding the rest off for 3rd place. The overall series winner this year was U-16 rider Kimberley English (Welwyn Wheelers) sister of Felix, 2nd Emily Bagnall (WyndyMilla) and in 3rd place Keria McVitty (Kings Cliffe Flyers). They each received a small cash prize and courtesy of Maxifuel a Maxitone holdall with Maxitone fuel and bottles. The 3 events more than justified their slot in the series and hopefully this will encourage more organisers to include a specific women’s class in their race programme.

The E123 race was full on from the start as expected with the number of class riders in the line up. Steve Golla and Adam Brittain (both High Wycombe CC) were the first to stretch the field with returning Angus Macalister (Norwood Paragon), previous series winner Jerone Walters (now VC St Raphael), rising star Adam Cotterell (Zappis CC) pulling away with Pete Wager (Felt-Colbornes RT) after 20km. Wager sat up (perhaps thinking of his overall position?) which appeared to give Andy Betts (now Felt Colbornes RT) his cue to jump away joining Walters (in his first race back) and Golla. In the finale Golla seemed to be hanging on, leaving gaps and generally grimacing but all this proved to be a feint as he came in well clear of Betts and Walters. A tight sprint followed for the next 3 places with only hundredths separating Wager, Jamie Pine(London Dynamo) and young Rory Townsend (Prestige VC). Max Stedman of Palmer Perk Velo impressed again and having recovered from his big effort on Boxing Day finished a fine 10th.

Race 5 Monday 26th December 2011

click here to view racing photos in the Imperial Winter Series

An un-seasonally mild 13 degrees C met a diminished field of competitors for the Boxing Day races; it did, however, feel a little more relaxed than previous weeks.

Twenty riders started the 4th cat race which, in the closing stages, was animated by Phil Sowton (WyndyMilla) – he took off solo, made a good gap and looked strong enough to stay away – sadly though he finally ran out of steam on the last lap. Jono Adams (London Dynamo) took the bunch sprint from Darren Gardner (Cadence) and Neil McCann (VC Elan). Andrew Deans (London Dynamo) wins the random prize of the WyndyMilla bike fit.

WyndyMilla prize winnerAndrew Deans (London Dynamo)

The Ladies race saw a slightly disappointing field of 8 riders line up and although it started promisingly it fizzled out until the last lap – perhaps as a result of the size of the group? However, the final run in was exciting with Lydia Boylan (Look Mum No Hands!) winning from Keria McVitty (Kings Cliffe Flyers)and Kimberley English (Welwyn Wheelers) (ably supported by photographer Mum Pauline).

Maxifuel prize prize winner Rune Sanbeck Nilsson (London Dynamo)

A slightly bigger entry for the 3rd cats saw 4 riders - Nick Baker (Zappis), Dominic Clegg (Redhill CC), Werner van der Merwe (MarathonMTB) and Vaughan Luff - forged an early lead and with all of them working well they eventually lapped the main group with a few minutes to go. Rune Sanbeck Nilsson (London Dynamo) wins the random prize of the MaxiFuel pack.

All the main contenders lined up for the E123 race and were clearly focused from the start. Rory Townsend (Prestige VC) (with most of his family supporting – no pressure!) and Conall Yates (InGear Quickvit) took off and made 40 seconds quite quickly. Under pressure, the main group split into three with the chasing group comprising Steve Golla (High Wycombe), Pete Wager (Felt-Colbornes), Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla), Jamie Pine (London Dynamo), Arjan Planting (Dulwich Paragon), Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers), Max Stedman (Palmer Park) and newcomer Nicholas Beale (Beeline Bikes). With their lead diminishing the two leaders sat up and the two groups merged. This group surged and then eased up with several riders clearly thinking of the overall and others out for individual glory. The second group looked at times to be closing but eventually detonated under the pressure. On the last lap Conall Yates leapt away for a long one but on the run in Jamie Pine catapulted himself to an unassailable lead, just too strong for the rest. Conall held on for second followed by a close knit group of Arjan Planting, Pete Wager, Rory Townsend and Steve Golla.

The series is now taking shape with the protagonists eyeing the points and overall glory.

The 4th cat race was very tight and hard fought with little room to manoeuvre and escape. After many attempts to break from the main group Matthew Franklin (Bristol Road Club), Simon Oxenham (VC10) and Ben Hall (Bristol Road Club) escaped, however, it was Steve Morrell (Aylesbury CC) who finally got to the line first with Oxenham followed by Mark Dempster (Kingston Wheelers). The WyndyMilla 4th cat random prize is awarded to 5th place finisher Matthew Franklin (Bristol Road Club) so he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

The 3rd cat race was altogether faster and far more aggressive with Daniel Stevens (Neon-Digital.co.uk), Dave McMullen (GWR Team) and Neil Heffernan (ViVelo-bikes/Inverse CyClaim RT) very active from the start. In the closing stages 2 riders broke clear - Dominic Clegg (Redhill CC) Andy Lack (Kingston Wheelers) - in the run in the stronger Clegg held off Lack for the win. The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 11th place finisher Jason Gardiner (Kingston Wheelers); he receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

In the Women’s race it was fast and difficult to hang on to a wheel made all the more challenging by the crosswinds; however, it came down to a sprint finish with a frantic surge to the line. The strength of ex-rower Karla Boddy (High Wycombe CC) won through from Kimberley English (Welwyn Wheelers) in 2nd and Emily Bagnall (WyndyMilla) in 3rd place.

Normal service resumed in the E123 race with Peter Cole (Handslingracing) and Sam Humpheson (Look Mum No Hands!) flying off the front hotly pursued by Arjan Planting (Dulwich Paragon). Next to try were Nat Spurling (Finsbury Park) and Rory Townsend (Prestige VC) but by this time Cole was feeling the effects of his early move and dropped back. A strong break then formed with Steve Golla (High Wycombe), Jamie Pine (London Dynamo), Ashley Holding (GB MSTina), Adam Brittain (High Wycombe CC) and Townsend. Connall Yates (InGear Quickvit RT) and Planting made a supreme effort to bridge and almost closed the gap, their efforts were rewarded by staying clear to the line for 5th and 6th place followed by a lone effort from Andy Betts (Felt Colbornes RT) with Peter Wager (Felt Colbornes RT) leading the main group in. In the sprint Jamie Pine was determined to win and did just that closely followed by Golla and Rory Townsend just beating Brittain.

Race 3 Saturday 17th December 2011

It was another cold but thankfully dry day with cross winds and only a tail wind at the bottom and top of the circuit. The racing was preceded by a further briefing by both the race organisers and British Cycling’s Commissaire on race etiquette and a reminder that safety of the riders is paramount at all times.

In the 4th cat. race, Dan Stevens (Neon-Digital.co.uk) was attacking from the start and livened things up, but the main group were very attentive and the wind made it difficult to break away. The race distance was cut down slightly to allow a free run to the finish line and in the end it was strong man Stevens who was in the early moves who had the power to cross the line ahead of Mark Dempster (Kingston Wheelers) and Duncan Schwier (Twickenham CC), the latter has now achieved sought after 3rd cat status. The WyndyMilla 4th cat random prize is awarded to 31st place finisher Andy Leatherbarrow (Kingston Wheelers CC) so he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

WyndyMilla prize winner Andy Leatherbarrow (Kingston Wheelers CC)

In the 3rd cat. race, a much more aggressive race was witnessed as they appeared up for dealing with the conditions. Werner Van der Merwe (MarathonMTB.com) and Neil Heffernan (ViVelo-bikes/Inverse CyClaim RT) pulled away from the main field and opened a useful gap but were unable to sustain their advantage. Then almost immediately Mark Lawn (ViVelo-Bikes/Inverse CyClaim RT) moved away and was again joined my Van der Merwe totally focused on staying away for a high placing; they too were caught by the main field. With 50m to go to the line Dominic Clegg (Redhill CC) seemed to have enough distance for the win but then appeared to stop pedalling and was passed by fast finishers Rob Sharland (Kingston Wheelers), last weeks 4th cat winner and clearly a strong finisher holding off Krisztian Borbely (Cyclelab) with Peter Hudson (Durham University - AURA Cycles) in 4th place. Soon to be married Mark Northover (The Cycle Studio) (at the circuit with partner Sarah a World Triathlon champion), finished strongly in 5th place. The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 19th place finisher Leigh-Roy Macfarlane (Cycleworks) he receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

The E123 race had another class entry with all the overall contenders lining up. It was a fast and aggressive start as usual; Rudie Marias (La Fuga/Sigma Sport) and Bill Butterworth (Twickenham CC) (finding his usual winter good form) were particularly active with overall leader Golla joining in, making it very difficult for those at the tail end of the field. They in turn came back into the main field, the next move off the front involved Jamie Pine (London Dynamo), Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla/MaxiFuel) and Mark Edwards (Thames Velo) all within 15km of the start. Edwards dropped back leaving Pine and Furniss to soldier on for another few laps.

Other attacks followed with Conall Yates (InGear Quickvit RT), James Norris (High Wycombe CC) and Junior star Rory Townsend (Prestige VC), then Marais and Peter Cole (Handslingracing ) and then Norris on his own and again ever vigilant Pine with Jo Skelton (Look Mum No Hands!) - all these efforts were ultimately nullified. Then with 10km to go, the one move of the race that stuck came from Elite rider Peter Wager (Felt-Colbornes RT) and James Norris, which went unnoticed by some of the main group! Wager and Norris, aided by his High Wycombe fan club cheering him on, pulled away to a 40 sec. lead but the latter’s earlier efforts started to tell and Wager was clearly doing most of the work. The only possible upset came with 4km to go when Henry Furniss, as he had done the previous week, launched himself from the main group with a massive effort cheered on by his wife and not so enthusiastic young daughter! He got within 20 seconds and looked almost certain for a 3rd place but such was the speed of the main group he was absorbed with 500m to go with; Jaime Pine took valuable points for 3rd place by leading the main bunch home.

The final sprint for the win was hard fought but after such a fine effort by both riders Wager had the strength to hold off Norris with all the spectators present appreciating their efforts.

Golla was 4th and holds onto his overall top place in the series with Wager and Pine now challenging and all to play for over the Christmas period.

Race 2 Saturday 10th December 2011

click here to view photo of racing in the Imperial Winter Series 2011/2012

A cold bright afternoon with a full field for the 3rd and 4th cat races and a weaker wind than last week. However, the standard of riding in some cases was very poor resulting in a number of crashes which was very disappointing after last week’s excellent start.

A core group of 30 riders forced the pace over the early laps leaving small groups of riders chasing on their own. The main group stayed together, despite the hiccup with catching back the 3rds race (as noted below), and it was won in a sprint finish by Rob Sharland (Kingston Wheelers) from his team mate Jason Gardiner (Kingston Wheelers) and Dan Mitchell (Redhill CC). Sharland will be very pleased with his effort which moves him up a category. The WyndyMilla 4th cat random prize is awarded to 11th place finisher Marc Townsend (Neon-Digital.co.uk) so he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

The 3rd cat race was rather more aggressive and there were several attacks but unfortunately half way through the pace let up allowing the 4th cats to claw back their advantage, however, the BC commissaire neutralised the group in order for the 4th cat race to have a clear sprint for the finish. Iain Palmer (Twickenham CC) proved to be the strongest in the run into the line and after the messy middle part of the race, it finished on a very worthy note. Palmer has been showing great form lately and looks to be heading to becoming a 1st cat rider, and coming from a rowing background this is very credible. The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 7th place finisher Mark Northover (CC Giro); he receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

The E123 race was entirely different with an entry of 46 riders and as would be expected it was very fast and aggressive from the start with plenty of attacks with riders going clear in 2’s and 3’s notably Tom Bell (Twickenham CC), Cam Swarbrick (AW Cycles), Stephen Bradbury (AW Cycles) and Harry Strudley (AW Cycles), however, they were pulled back by a very focused main group. Another break formed almost immediately with Bradbury again and Henry Latimer (Zappi's CC) but again they too were pulled back by hard riding by the main group lead by James Norris (High Wycombe CC) who then himself formed a duo with Latimer but they were reeled in by the main group. With 12km to go the decisive move came from in form Conall Yates (InGear Quickvit RT) and previous stalwart Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon) and junior rider Rory Townsend (Prestige VC). Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla) made a massive effort to bridge the gap and almost made it and then blew up big time, unfortunately the flying trio in spite of all their hard work were caught with 8km to go.

In the run in Steve Golla (High Wycombe CC) with a prodigious effort in the last 400m opened a gap to win comfortably from a brilliant Townsend, who had the strength and courage to hang on for 2nd place - an outstanding effort - certainly the man of the race. Bradbury managed to hold off Jerzy Kuzminski (London Phoenix) for 3rd place with the main bunch being lead in by Ed Rose (progression/bikelux), Pete Wager (Felt-Colbornes RT), Henry Latimer (Zappi's CC) and Vince Halpern (Handsling Racing).

Steve Golla now leads the overall series on 350 points. Jamie Pine and Rory Townsend both on 230.

Following this weekend’s events Imperial will be reviewing the race format over the coming weeks before adopting any changes – watch this space.

Race 1 Saturday 3rd December 2011

First Race in the Imperial Winter Series

This time last year the race was cancelled because of snow and ice but this time around, although breezy, it was dry, sunny and 10°c – a perfect Winter start. It was heartening to see the number of entries for both 3rd and 4th cat races, 48 and 46 respectively. Thirty three started the E123 race and it would be good to see more.

The standard of riding in both the earlier races was first class, in spite of many riders in the 4th race racing for the first time and this bodes well for the series. There also was far more aggression shown in all races and in the 3rd cat race a group of 6 detached themselves from the main group with the wind playing a part in splitting the group and many going off the back. Both finishes were contested cleanly without incident and both winners were very worthy.

The 4th cat race resulted in a clear win with a long sprint by Nick Baker (Zappi's Cycling Club) by 2 seconds from Mark Longstaff (Colchester Rovers) in 2nd with 3rd taken by James Local (London Dynamo/ Prologue) by half a wheel from Karl Moseley (Stourbridge Velo). The WyndyMilla 4th cat. random prize is awarded to 19th place finisher Adam Capes (London Dynamo/Prologue), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

WyndyMilla prize winner Adam Capes Maxifuel prize winner James Walker

The 3rd cat race was won by Joe Holloway (VC10), 2nd place was Jacek Reder and 3rd was Tim Benham (WyndyMilla). The other 3 riders in the original split were Andy Lack (Kingston Wheelers), Robert LeMaster (London Dynamo/Prologue) and Steven Cottington (Cadence RT). The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 24th place finisher James Walker (High Wycombe CC); he receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

In the E123 race it was good to see longstanding supporters of the series return to the start line again, notably Bill Butterworth (back with Twickenham CC), Steve Golla (returning to High Wycombe CC), Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers), brothers Ben and Chris Moores (Norwood Paragon), Rudie Marais (Archer RC), Vince Halpern (now Handsling Racing), Jo Skelton (Look Mum No Hands!) and Matthew Carden (Team Quest) to mention a few, along with Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla/MaxiFuel) who again is sponsoring the series and many newcomers making up a class entry. Notable absentees were Lewis Atkins, Jake Martin and the Sigma Sport Team.

The racing, as hoped for, was fast and furious from the start with many attacks and the wind in the back straight proving to be the determining factor. The race blew apart after only 15km and from the split two riders moved away ahead of the main group; Steve Golla having a day off from Cyclo Cross (and obviously in good form) and Conall Yates (InGear Quickvit RT). They rode together for 8km before being joined by Jamie Pine (London Dynamo/Prologue) last year’s overall 3rd cat winner, with a furious chase to bridge to gap to the leading two. The three shared the work well and although there were attempts to bridge from the peloton their lead held steadily at 55 secs. First Race in the Imperial Winter Series Three other riders did manage to pull from the main bunch as the group slowed - Peter Cole (Handsling Racing), Adam Brittain (High Wycombe CC) and Matthew Carden (Team Quest – recovering from an earlier mechanical) – and they too rode well together. Henry Furniss broke free also and made a frantic effort to get to the chasing trio but in the end rode in on his own to settle for a well deserved 7th place.

In the run into the finish Conall Yates dropped off and left a very fast finishing Jamie Pine to hold off the strength of Steve Golla in a furious sprint for the line, it was an outstanding effort by all three but especially by Jamie. The same goes for 4th place with fast finisher Peter Cole having to give best to Adam Brittain in another very rapid sprint with Matt Carden hanging on for 6th place. All in all, a fascinating race worthy of the Elite category.

Imperial Winter Series 2011/2012

Racing in the Imperial Winter Series

First race 3rd December - are you ready?

Race registration and entries

The cyclo cross season might be in full swing but let’s not forget that most of us are already thinking about the road season in 2012 – so welcome again then to the 2011/12 Imperial Winter series - we’ll have a packed programme to cater for everyone as usual. The introduction of the Women’s race last year (over the Christmas break) proved a great success and seemed to hit the spot with the riders so this is a definite again; we would love to see it attracting a bigger, stronger field. Similarly we are delighted to continue our strong links with WyndyMilla and Maxifuel and this will again major on the up and coming categories but with some further recognition for the main E123 race.

image of Imperial Winter Series race code

One of the unique joys of running a series over a long period is to see the changing faces, many of those new ones, and last year’s series featured some strong rides by some new names and we remain convinced that Hillingdon provides a safe environment for riders to take up road racing. There has been much debate about the standard of racing at Hillingdon, some related to the standard of riding and some to the direction of racing. We consider that the chances of incidents are minimised by grouping riders of similar standard and by limiting the sizes of the field; by offering more category specific races we believe we are aligned to this. In respect of the question about clockwise vs. anti-clockwise again we see no evidence that this is affecting track safety and are maintaining the traditional direction for this year. However, plans are in place to replace the judge’s hut at the top of the hill with a new facility on the apron; this may mean a change in the longer term – most of you will be aware how cold it is standing on the top of the hill in winter, plus the difficulty of operating the photo finish equipment with frozen fingers!

The new club house has been a very welcome addition to the operational and comfort levels at Hillingdon; it was great to see riders, supporters and family staying on to talk about the racing and cycling in general – it’s not always about the racing! It is difficult to see how we survived for so long without it! However, you will appreciate that this is a costly facility to run and a result there has been a slight increase in fees this year which we will have to pass on – we recognise that these are difficult times so have tried to minimise this.

And so to the prizes! We will again be having overall prize money for the E123 and 3rd cat. races. These are effectively linked to the numbers of races we run and despite losing 2 last year because of snow we maintained the same level as previous years; we hope to do the same again this year.

Racing in the Imperial Winter Series
E123 – Maxifuel packs to the top 3 overall

3rd Cat – Overall top 3 places win a free WyndyMilla custom cycling shoe insert fitting at their HQ near Guildford ; competitors will also be entered into a random selected finishing place each week to receive a Maxifuel pack of products.

4th Cat – Each week a random finish place will receive a Bike Fit courtesy of WyndyMilla

Women’s – a Maxifuel bag of products for the top 3 overall

Online (the web) entries proved successful for fast tracking at the sign-on table, so thanks to Rider HQ, they will be continuing this option for us again this season.

Ok, have you got all that? Series starts Saturday 3rd December, 12 rounds at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, comfortable club house and the usual Imperial Racing Teas will be provided.

Coaching

Again this year, there’s the opportunity to get in some coaching on circuit racing before the racing gets underway. Mark February 18th 2012 (it’s a Saturday) in your diary, as Prime Coaching will come to the Hillingdon Circuit for a four-hour (1-5pm) training session on the do’s and don’ts and probably a few ‘cunning tricks to have up your sleeve’ that’ll be sure to have you ready in every way for when the action kicks off. No question, circuit racing can be intense and riding in a fast moving peloton around a technical undulating circuit calls for an understanding of racing etiquette. If circuit racing is new to you, this is a must-attend. Don't forget to register to avoid disappointment.
