Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011

Phew-ey Lewis is the news!

In the E123 races we have again welcomed old friends and met new ones and are glad that this mix keeps the racing and the series fresh. It was particularly good to see Lewis Atkins back – he first raced in the Imperial series in 2006/07 – and is now a consistent winner and a great ambassador for the sport and his sponsors.

The presentation was held inside the clubroom for the first time with special guest Ron Webb presenting the prizes. Ron said a few words about his design of the track for the London Olympic and hoped that many of the riders present would make use of the very fast unique track both before and after the Olympic event. His message must have had a bewitching effect as his request for questions was met with deathly silence! The lucky draw included further prizes from series sponsor WyndyMilla and Maxifuel as well as £100 vouchers from Sigma Sport. The Doug Collins Combative Rider award went to Jake Martin who without doubt has been the most attacking rider; when interviewed he said that he was looking forward to ‘smashing it up’ on the road in the coming months! Overall Lewis Atkins thanked the Collins clan for organising the series, Henry Furniss of WindyMilla for his sponsorship and finally Alison the first aider who luckily, with the exception of the last day, had very little to do. Finally Mike Clark of Sport and Publicity presented Lucy with a bottle of wine and his sincere thanks on behalf of everyone for her dedicated efforts.

Ron Webb cycling track designer

Each year we review the format of the series to consider what has worked and what needs improvement; we appreciate any feedback received and try to take this on board. Despite being knocked back badly by the weather (we lost more races in the first 4 weeks than the total over the last 11 years!) we responded by adding another race on a Sunday.

For the first time we have had a lead sponsor and are most grateful to Henry Furniss of WyndyMilla for his commitment and enthusiasm and also for bringing Maxifuel with him.

This year we stuck with the two race format with 3’s and 4’s on the circuit at the same time and feel this went well with everybody respecting the need to keep apart. We consider that smaller fields, whilst slightly disappointing from an organiser’s viewpoint, has helped minimise the number of crashes; we see no reason to switch the race direction to clockwise.

photo of Jake Martin - Combative rider 2010/2011

This year after consultation with Mark Doel we introduced a mini series for Women and are absolutely delighted with the response; beforehand we would have settled for a field of 10-15, so to have 15-20 in all 3 races was a tremendous boost for us. Thank you all for your support - the racing was brilliant as well!

Thank you again from all of us to all of you – we hope you have a safe and successful Summer of racing and look forward to seeing you at the circuit on the 3rd December 2011 for the next Imperial Winter Series.

The mood was definitely upbeat and as the sun came out it was a perfect afternoon for the last race of the Winter series, the only downside was a crash after the finish line at the end of the 3rd cat race.

The 4th cat race produced a surprise with Liam Stones (4s Road Club) breaking away on his own after half distance and holding the lead to win by 16 seconds; the bunch following being led by Jon Munns and Phil Holland (Arbis LLP/Roy Pink Cycles RT. The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 12th place finisher Peter Green (CC Ashwell), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

photo of Jai Watson (Dulwich Paragon ) winner of the Maxifuel prize

In the 3rd cat race, previous 4th cat winner Conall Yates (In Gear Quickvit RT) produced the same effort riding away and finishing on his own. This is a remarkable feat considering that in January he was still a 4th cat! Jamie Pine (Le Col) took the series honours overall with totally consistent performances. The Maxifuel prize is awarded to 13th place finisher Jai Watson (Dulwich Paragon ); he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

The E123 race started more cautiously with the riders consolidating their positions rather than taking chances and losing out. But with an attack rather than with defensive riding more likely to succeed, Lewis Atkins (Twenty 3C Orbea) the overall leader took off after 25 km and the initiative was his and his alone. Tao Geoghegan-Hart (CC Hackney) went across to Atkins, there was hesitation in the main group and several riders then slipped away to join the leading two. Firstly Andy Betts (Sigma Sport) and then his team mate Jerone Walters and later further riders bridged to form a leading group of 10. However, such was the pace that several lost contact namely Ashley Holding (GB MSTina RT), Arjan Planting (Dulwich Paragon) and Michael Widera (Inverse Racing/Cyclaim) leaving a leading group of Walters, Betts, Atkins and Jake Martin who gradually pulled away and opened a gap of one minute 30 seconds.

However, the main group still had life in it and super time triallist Steve Legg (Police Sport UK CRT) pulled away on his own with 10km to go. It was a courageous effort but, with 5km to go, it Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011 eventually drew a few riders across - Phil Hersey (Eagle RC), Geoghegan-Hart, Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers) and Simon Henley (Team Corley Cycles). Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes) lying in 2nd place overall, said he was happy to stay in the main group with the Perfs Road Race in mind on Sunday, the 1st race of the season on the road. With two Sigma Sport riders in the leading four it was expected that either Walters or Betts would attack and although trying several times in the last 5km it was Atkins and Martin who were equal to their surges. Finally in the sprint Martin tried to his damnedest to distance Atkins but Lewis’s experience saw him cross the line 1st for another win with Walters and Betts 3rd and 4th. Geoghegan-Hart lead the second group in with Tom Smith and Vince Halpern (Awcycles) leading the main group home. This was a fitting end to a fine series of races.

Race 11 Saturday 5th February 2011

Another really trying days racing for all, the riders faced a gusting wind which made it very difficult riding (and judging!) with the racing splitting into small groups of riders.

The 4th cat race was no exception, breaking into 2 groups, with a lead group of 14 contesting the sprint - 1st place Joshua Swords (VC Meudon), 2nd place Henry Catchpole and in 3rd place Joe Clark (High Wycombe CC). The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 12th place finisher Max Brown (Didcot Phoenix), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

photo of Gavin Morton (Charlotteville CC) winner of the Maxifuel prize

The 3rd cat race saw a brilliant display of aggressive riding by Jamie Pine (Le Col), Rory Townsend (Prestige VC) and Jai Watson (Dulwich Paragon CC) who broke away after 20km and worked together so well they were never likely to be caught, even with the likes of Vaughan Luff (De Ver) and Rudie Marais working extremely hard at the front of the main group. With 2km to go Townsend made an attack which carried him well clear, a very courageous move which looked like a winning one but due to the gusting wind he was unfortunately caught by Pine with a full on devastating sprint helped by the tail wind. This must please Pine as this is his 2nd win of the series. The Maxifuel prize is awarded to 21st place finisher Gavin Morton (Charlotteville CC); he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011

The E123 race saw 44 line up. From the start Jake Martin (pendragon-lecol-colnago) again showed his enthusiasm for attacking racing, his awesome effort allowing him to ride alone for much of the race. Both Jerome Walters (Sigma Sport) and Bill Butterworth (Team Quest) rode off the front to try and close him down but to no avail and he held the gap at 50 seconds until finally a group pulled away including Steve Golla (Sigma Sport), Alexander King (Cyclefit Racing Team), Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes), Vince Halpern (AWCycles), Lewis Atkins (Twenty 3C Orbea), Mark Baines (Spirit Racing), Dante Carpenter (Astra Racing) and Josh Maynard (Welwyn Wheelers); Jerome Walters joined them several laps later. Martin was finally caught but obviously had the strength to stay with the group. The rest of the field were blown into a number of struggling groups with little hope of catching the front with the wind being so strong. However, they battled on, particularly the two GB MSTina RT riders Jason Edwards and Ashley Holding with Tony Gibb back from recent surgery and Butterworth in the 2nd group on the road sweeping up all the dropped riders. Both Walters and Golla were clearly thinking ahead to the road season doing massive turns on the front and although technically wasteful it was good training and made the rest of the lead group dig deep to hang in. With 2 km to go Jake Martin put in another massive effort which took everyone by surprise but they clawed their way back to his wheel, seemingly a spent force for the final sprint. Against expectations, however, he jumped again with 150m to go and it looked like he had done enough, but as with Cavendish in Milan-San Remo, Tom Smith persisted to the line to win by half a wheel; the difference was 1/100th of a second! Lewis Atkins finished close behind, his 3rd place securing him the win in the overall series. Worth a mention in the lead group was 1st year junior Dante Carpenter who looks a complete bike rider, Halpern who has been persistent throughout the series, newcomer Baines and finally an injured Golla back from a training accident in Wales last weekend.

Race 10 Saturday 29th January 2011

It was a bitterly cold day with the strong wind tending to neutralise any attacks although a number of riders in the 3rd cat race made fierce attacks off the front.

After 49 minutes of racing, the 4th cat race came down to a bunch finish with Rory Wilkinson (Dulwich Paragon) just beating Lewis Norris (Progressive Cycle Coaching Dev Squad); 3rd place James Fletcher (Inverse RT/Cyclaim) was followed by Ben Smith (Welwyn Wheelers). The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 19th place finisher Chris Rees (Pearson Cycles), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

photo of random prize winner - James Curry Inverse/Cyclaim

Similarly the 3rd cat race finished together but David Ladkin (Kingston Wheelers) with an exceptional burst of speed in the last 150 metres just kept the win from Jamie Pine (Le Col) with only under half a widths wheel between them, popular De Ver rider and long time supporter of the Winter Series Vaughan Luff with Rob Griffiths (London Phoenix CC) in 4th place. The Maxifuel prize is awarded to 29th place finisher James Curry (Inverse RT/Cyclaim); he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

The E123 race started at great pace again with Jake Martin (pendragon-lecol-colnago) shooting off the front almost immediately; however, this time no one went with him and he was brought back after 2 km alone at the front. Felix English (Science-and-Sport) did attempt to cross but was caught. Then after 10 km Alexander King (Cyclefit Racing Team), Ashley Holding (GB MSTina RT), Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes), Allan Ridler (Team Cycle Kingdom) and English did open a gap but perhaps too early to achieve a significant lead on the main group.

At half distance as the main group were beginning to tire a lead group formed and rode away with fierce attacking from all the eight riders namely King, Holding, Ridler, Lewis Atkins (Twenty 3C Orbea), James Moss (Endura Racing), Matt Pilkington (Progressive Cycle Coaching Dev Squad), Arjan Planting (Dulwich Paragon) and Adam Cotterell (WyndyMilla/MaxiFuel). They moved away smoothly and working well together looked unlikely to be caught although in the main group English, Martin and Smith, who all surprisingly had missed the move, worked very hard to keep in contention.

Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011

The eight continued to distance themselves from the group, there were continual attacks from King and Moss but Atkins was strong and vigilant and covered the moves. With just 1 km to the finish, around the top hairpin, Moss attacked hard and strung the group out but to no effect. It was a very hard fought effort to the line where strength more than speed was to count, Pilkington was at the front with just 100 metres to go and it looked as if he had done enough to win but Atkins was determined and clawed his way past him for the line with Cotterell taking an excellent 3rd place holding off Planting and strong finisher Holding. Moss’s effort told as he tailed off in 8th place, he really deserved more. Jo Skelton (Look Mum No Hands!) held off Vince Halpern (AWcycles), Tom Kruger (45 Road Club) and Smith leading the main group in. Another enthralling race with action all the way.

Race 9 Saturday 22nd January 2011

Another cold and windy day although this week it was blowing from the north west providing a draggy climb up to the finish. All riders seemed to be aware of the difficult conditions and hung onto each others wheels to avoid the inevitable.

photo of maxifuel prize winner William Macke - AWCycles

Both 3rd and 4th cat races stayed together. The 4th cat race saw Myles Willis (Dulwich Paragon) take 1st on his first visit to the winter series followed in by Joshua Swords (VC Meudon) with James Walker (High Wycombe CC) in 3rd. The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 12th place finisher Daniel Doncaster (CC Ashwell), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale. Last week’s winner in the 4th cat race Andrew Ghagan (VC Elan) became this week’s winner in the 3rd cat race (is this a first for this series?); he will be one to keep an eye on, 2nd over the line came David Ladkin (Kingston Wheelers) then Simon Dawson (Inverse/Cyclaim RT). The Maxifuel prize is awarded to 14th place finisher William Macke (AW Cycles); he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

The E123 race was completely the opposite, splitting up almost immediately due to one man, our previous overall winner, Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) who was in scintillating form with the backing of his two team mates, super strong men Steve Golla and Wouter Sybrandy. Walters attacked almost from the start with two other riders going with him - young Oliver Newlan (Twickenham CC) and Ishmael Burdeau (Agiskoviner). They stayed together for 8km until Burdeau dropped off, quickly followed by Newlan and effectively that was that. In the conditions it was difficult to believe, he made it seem effortless and a joy to watch, however, it must be said that his two team mates probably disrupted any organised chase from behind. After 30km, however, Sybrandy together with Alexander King (Cyclefit Racing Team), Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes) and overall leader of this series Lewis Atkins (Twenty 3C Orbea ) did go clear. Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011 At first glance Sybrandy’s tactics appeared somewhat strange as he seemed to do all the pulling in the quartet but he was surely calculating the distance his team mate was in the lead as they did not get close. A 3rd group formed towards the end of the race with Newlan, Golla again and Michael Widera (Inverse Racing/Cyclaim) but these were caught in the run in. Walters got much applause for his brilliant performance and was warmly congratulated by his wife and children before he rode home to Weybridge. Tom Smith improved on his last two races and led the second group in ahead of Atkins with King and Sybrandy in 3rd and 4th place. Vince Halpern (Awcycles.co.uk) led the reminding riders in after a difficult and trying day.

photo of Photos of the Womens Imperial Winter Series

It was back to back this weekend at the Imperial Winter Series with an added Woman’s race on Sunday to compensate for the cancelled Boxing Day event. The Sunday entry was slightly down, however, 17 women entered for their event, which from the Organiser’s view point was heartening. This new aspect of the Winter Series has easily met Imperial’s expectations providing good fields across the range of categories coupled with professional riding which it is hoped will encourage more women into racing. Both days were dry but with the windy conditions, gusting up to 30mph at times, adding a further dimension to the racing. Even with the weather conditions and small entry on Sunday, all races without exception were keenly contested and of a high standard.

The 4th cat race was a much smaller entry than we have seen so far but regardless a spirited performance from all the riders. A group of four broke away from the main group and rode well together and stayed clear to contest the finish, with the young Sam Hayes (Bristol RC) taking an excellent clean sprint from Liam Bremer (London Phoenix CC) and in 3rd place Andrew Connington (AndersElectronic/TMG). The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 12th place finisher Paul Martin, he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

photo of Paul Martin - WyndyMilla prize winnerThe Women’s final race in the series saw a very appreciative entry of 17 line up at the start, all worried about the strong wind and the 3rd cat race hurtling past. Oddly enough, the women stayed together sheltering from what felt like a gale force wind, however, Jayne Paine (Willesden) tried several times but the race was cleverly controlled by the Look Mum No Hands! Team. For all of their team work and lead out for Charlotte Easton (Look Mum No Hands!) it was a very tight finish, with Easton just holding off Kim English (Welwyn Wheelers) with ex-triathlete Tanya Hunt (Team Endurance) improving to an excellent 3rd place. Yet another fine display of racing by all the women racers.

Easton took 1st place in the first ever Women’s Imperial Winter Series with 2nd place Cassie Gledhill (Orbea-for goodness shakes) and in 3rd place Hunt, thank you goes to our sponsors for this event Maxifuel.

The 3rd cat race saw 22 riders come to the line for their 50 min race plus 5 laps. We saw a very attacking race from the start with Rudie Marais (Team Archer) prominent throughout, however, the ride of the day must go to Rory Tounsend (Prestige Velo Club) who rode away with 4km to go and it was most exciting to see him hang on and cross the line rather bewildered with a very fast chasing group lead by Marais not quite making it. It took much courage in the conditions to make such a move and he deservedly finished alone. Truly a rider to watch. photo of Rob Griffiths (London Phoenix)
The Maxifuel prize is awarded to 5th place finisher Rob Griffiths (London Phoenix); he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

E123 race was almost over before it started with Lewis Atkins (Twenty 3C Orbea) and Jake Martin (pendragon-lecol-colnago) attacking at the start catching the remaining riders completely unawares; the gap grew to 35 seconds after 3 km such was their strength and speed into the wind and it steadily increased. Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011 They were told hold back on catching the main group by the Chief Commissar, but there was no let up in the main group with again the Twickenham CC young riders Alex Pantelides and Declan Higgins combining well and continually attacking. However, after 30km Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes), Marcel Six (Twenty 3c - Orbea) and Jason Edwards (GB MSTina RT) slipped away with David Murrell (London Phoenix) trying like mad to cross to them but sadly unsuccessfully, they were never going to catch the flying duo and they in turn were in no danger of being caught by the main group. Both groups worked successfully together and were a joy to watch with their smooth changing particularly the Atkins/Martin duo and they should look forward to a very successful road season. Jake Martin took the win with Atkins securing more series points he is the clear favourite. From the second group Smith went for a long sprint and with a strong tail wind came comfortably in 3rd beating Six and Edwards with Vince Halpern (Awcycles) leading the main group in ahead of a hard working Ashley Holding (GB MSTina RT) with Murrell finishing 12th after his earlier efforts. A great race to finish the weekend.

Race 8 Saturday 15th January 2011

The 4th cat race finished in one group but not without the wind catching many riders out and falling off the back; despite that an interesting race over 40 km with plenty of attacks that in the end came down to a bunch sprint with Andrew Ghagan (VC Elan / Harry Perry Cycles) winning with Adam Brittain (High Wycombe CC) 2nd and James Fletcher (Inverse RT/Cyclaim) in 3rd. The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 13th place finisher Mark Lawn (Inverse RT/Cyclaim.co.uk), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

photo of random prize winner Mrark O'Brien

The 3rd cat race promised much with continuing attacks from the start, notably from young Declan Higgins (Twickenham CC). It showed the commitment by all the riders to be competitive, particularly among the young riders. There was a break of 3 riders from the main group and Jamie Pine (Le Col) latched onto the trio after a solo effort and with 12km still to go it looked good. At the end it was Pine’s strength which held off a fast finishing Chris Wood (WyndyMilla) with Conall Yates (In Gear Quickvit RT) in 3rd place.
The Maxifuel prize is awarded to 25th place finisher Mark O'Brien (Archer RC); he receives a Maxifuel pack Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

The E123 race was again intense from the start with even more commitment which for winter racing is quite electrifying. There are so many talented and class riders now involved, with Tony Gibb amongst them and it was always going to be full on race, previous series winner Jerone Walters (Sigma Sport) back, it gave the race added spice. It was heartening to see the young Welwyn Wheelers mixing it and with talented Dante Carpenter (Astra racing), Jake Martin (pendragon-lecol-colnago) battling through and added to this Alexander King (Cyclefit Racing Team) attacking from the front and covering all the moves, he and Walters looked as if their effort may have got them to the finish together but it was not to be with all the overall contenders bringing them back together. Again it was Steve Golla’s (Sigma Sport) prodigious strength which took him well clear to a comfortable win again with all the known sprinters missing his wheel, perhaps the only one capable was Tony Gibb but again he seemed to have a problem in the run in. A fascinating race.

Race 7 Saturday 8th January 2011

Conall Yates (In Gear Quickvit RT)

A dry windy day which promised much with an excellent entry, the wind will always play a part in deciding the outcome of any race on the Hillingdon circuit and in fact it was the case in each of the category races on Saturday.

Chris Wood (WyndyMilla)

In the 4th cat race an inspired ride by Conall Yates (In Gear Quickvit RT) who simply rode away in the early stages and stayed away for most of the 40 km, eventually lapping the field. It was an impressive show of lone riding and it will be interesting to see how he races with the 3rd cats next week. Andrew Ghagan (VCElan/Harry Perry Cycles) led in the chasers beating Kristof Neys (London Dynamo) into third place.
The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 1st place finisher Conall Yates (In Gear Quickvit RT), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

The 3rd cat race was equally inspiring and with 20 km of the 45 km race, a group of 3 escaped and set up a substantial lead with father and son Kevin and Joe Holloway (VC 10), Andy Lack (Kingston Wheelers) and Paul Troughton making it four. Troughton dropped out of the group and with Kevin Holloway constantly working hard the trio maintained the gap with Kevin Holloway (VC10) eventually easing off with 5km to go. Young Holloway took a comfortable win in the sprint from the remaining man of the original trio Lack providing us with another interesting race of high quality.
The MaxiFuel prize is awarded to 26th place finisher Chris Wood (WyndyMilla); he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011 The E123 was as good as a road race should be with the action starting after 1 km with a vicious attack by Jake Martin (Pendragon-Lecol-Colnago) quickly joined by Angus MacAlister, the move totally shaped the afternoon racing. From this effort a leading group of 15 formed with a smaller group of 7 chasing and finally a group containing Bill Butterworth (Tm Quest) and Tony Gibb (Cycle Premier). The front group worked steadily and increased their lead and after half distance the big surprise was Jo Skelton (Look Mum No Hands!) pulling out unwell/unfit but the continual attacking by the Sigma Sport pair Steve Golla and Andy Betts could not have helped. Finally with 8 km to go under the continued pressure of the group attacking it split with 4 riders going off the front. Golla, Lewis Atkins (Twenty 3C Orbea), Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes) and Arjan Planting (Dulwich Paragon) who is now showing excellent form after being out last season with an injury. Everything was set for a very interesting finish with the two pure sprinters Smith and Atkins and one very strong man in Golla with Planting a little unknown. To everyone’s surprise Golla launched a huge effort with 400m to go which no one could answer, not even managing to get on his wheel. Atkins got the better of Smith for 2nd place; Planting slightly tailed off for 4th. Marcel Six (Twenty 3c Orbea) lead the remaining 10 in beating Jerzy Kuzminski and David Murrell (both London Phoenix) with Vince Halpern (AWCycles) leading the 3rd group in just head of junior Dante Carpenter (Astra racing). After the previous weeks one group race this was a revelation and great to watch.

See you at the circuit on Saturday and Sunday

Race 6 Monday 3rd January 2011

Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011

A very cold but dry day greeted riders for the holiday races. The field in each category had increased number of riders with the Women’s reaching 20 from Saturday’s 10 making a total of 135 riders in all. After the disappointment of cancelling the previous races it was good to be back especially as we have managed to secure an extra date of Sunday 16th January to replace the one lost on Boxing Day.

photo of random prize

Both the 4th and 3rd cat races finished in bunch finishes, however, that does not tell the whole story as both races had some very attacking moves but unfortunately no breaks were achieved. The 3rd cat race saw one inspired effort after 20 km by Jack Edwards (San Fairy Ann CC) unfortunately this came to nothing but it surely was worth a try to force the break. Both Rudie Marais (Team Archer) and Vaughan Luff (DeVer/Neovite) made several gallant efforts too to break clear but in the end it came down to a bunch finish; Marais had to settle for 2nd place again, just beaten by a brilliant effort by Tom Kruger (45 Road Club) with Luff in 6th.
The MaxiFuel prize is awarded to 27th place finisher Tom Killick of Pearson; he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

Daniel Justin (Dulwich Paragon)

In the 4th cat race the finish was furious but with everybody holding their line and Jamie Pine of Le Col coming through the strongest taking the verdict, Kristof Neys (London Dynamo) followed with Steve Middleton (Ultimate Fitness) in 3rd. The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 8th place finisher Daniel Justin (Dulwich Paragon), he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

Photos of race 6

The women’s race saw a textbook break with three riders riding away from the main group that included Saturday’s winner Charlotte Easton (Look Mum No Hands!) with team mate Elise Sherwell and Mathilde Pauls (Pearson). They are all ex-international rowers and they rode in perfect unison and were never going to be caught. The two Look Mum No Hands! team made a good tactical finish with Sherwell winning comfortably from Pauls with Saturday’s lone winner Easton coasting into 3rd place after leading out her team mate. Emily Barnes (Rapha Condor CC) led the remaining group in for 4th place. It was exciting to watch and an excellent performance by all the riders.

In the E123 race 42 riders lined up all itching to go before the cold set in. Arjan Planting (Dulwich Paragon) attacked from the go on his own, however, it was short lived. Returning Steve Golla (Sigma Sport) and Andrew Macalister tried to string the whole bunch out but were brought back after a few km and then in form Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers) made a brave effort with Bill Butterworth (Team Quest) to break the pattern of the race but they too were brought back. Another worthwhile move saw Adam Cotterell (WyndyMilla/MaxiFuel ) going it alone but Lewis Atkins Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011 (Twenty3c–Orbea) and Jo Skelton (Look Mum No Hands!) saw the danger and pulled him back before Phil Hersey(EagleRC) and Planting again got together - but nothing came of it. There were signs that the race would split but there were no really sustained efforts; however, in the last 8km an effort was initiated by Ishmael Burdeau (Agiskoviner) but it was too near the finish. Holloway tried again but to no avail and it was all set for a full on bunch sprint. In the final 2km Golla went hard off the front to make it more difficult for the sprinters, as he was drawn back Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla/MaxiFuel ) tried with Atkins although it seemed to slow the effort. In the end it was Atkins lungs that held off Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes) and Skelton. At that speed the difference between 1st and 2nd was just 2/100ths of a second with Jo Skelton a further 3/100th’s behind. Felix English (Science-and-Sport) was a well deserved 4th with Ashley Holding (GB MSTina RT) picking the right wheel for 5th place; another very entertaining and well ridden race.

Race 5 New Year Day Saturday 1st January 2011

At last !

Although dull and gloomy with light rain, 82 riders signed on for the various events for only the second race in the series due to the inclement weather.

The 4th cat race was won by Phil Gibbs (Dulwich Paragon), 2nd Steven Cottington and in 3rd place Liam Bremer (London Phoenix CC). The generator let us down at the crucial time rendering the photo finish equipment useless but all the riders gathered in the clubhouse and worked out the placing, later a photo was provided that confirmed their positions. Well done to an honest bunch!
Photos of Womens race The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 3rd place finisher Liam Bremer – he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

In the Ladies event, again a much higher standard is being set and although only 10 riders started they rode hard for the whole of their 40 mins. plus 5 laps, however, an outstanding performance by Charlotte Easton (Look Mum No Hands!) who rode away, stayed away and finally lapped the other riders. At one point she rode back past the 3rd cat race! She had the help of two team mates Lydia Boylan and Helen McKay and was encouraged by her sponsor/manager Sam Humpheson who later rode in the E123 race. Easton emphasised the need and desire for more ladies races.

photo of Dylan Kenneway

In the 3rd cat race James Lowden (Lewes Wanderers) took 1st place, a position he has been chasing and come close to since the last winter series. 2nd Rudie Marais (Archer RC) who was third in the last race and obviously now has the taste for a win. The MaxiFuel prize is awarded to 17th place finisher Dylan Kenneway of London Dynamo; he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

The E123 race saw an entry of 33 riders line up. All were bemoaning the lack of miles in their legs, although it did not show from the start, as the speed was furious with young Jake Martin (Pendragon) attacking on his own in the first 2 km. Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers) a veteran of the series and Lewis Atkins (Twenty 3C Orbea) saw the opportunity of an early break and went across to him; however, the main group were very vigilant and they were brought together again - certainly the Christmas blues appeared to have been blown away? Next to string the race out was Stoyko Bussarov (Eagle RC), who’s looking to race in Italy this season; also in the move was Chris Dick (London Phoenix) but Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011again they were quickly brought back. Next to move were Brock Duncumb Rogers (One Life Dev Squad) who escaped with circuit veteran Bill Butterworth (Team Quest) as always watching the moves in front. Next was the largest gap of the early part of the race to appear, gaining a 35sec advantage was Sam Humpheson (Look Mum No Hands!! ) café owner but like previous attempts it was thwarted.

Next to try was Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla/MaxiFuel) and David Murrell (London Phoenix), Nat Spurling (Finsbury Park), Felix English (Science&Sport), Phil Holloway and Vince Halpern (Awcycles) and once again the strongest and fastest rider Jake Martin. This was the basis of the final break and also included Graham Hills (Southborough & Dist CC) and Bussarov. This group of nine worked hard and with only 12km to go they were not likely to be caught. Furniss seized the chance in the back straight to open up the sprint, it split the nine leaders, the others were quick to react and a slight headwind finish uphill was going to make it difficult to find the right wheel. Atkins had to dig really deep to hold off Martin, English and Furniss with previous winner Jo Skelton (Look Mum No Hands!) leading in the main group. All in all, an excellent finish in an action packed race. Atkins now leads overall and will be a marked man although he looks to be at his best again.

Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011

For the first race in the Imperial Winter Series 2010/2011, sponsored by WyndyMilla and MaxiFuel the weather was kinder than the previous week – in fact it was relatively balmy! Last week’s cancellation was disappointing obviously but this was only the third time in the 11 years of Winter racing. We also now have use of the new club house which is a massive step forward and means that facilities are finally aligned to the popularity of the circuit.

Three races were run this week with good entries in all with an average of 45 riders. Overall the standard of riding did seem much improved in both the 3rd and 4th cat races. The 3rd cat race was started with a gap of 40 seconds before the 4th cats were released; such was the speed of the 4th cat race that they caught the rear of the 3rd in their sprint to the finish line. There were no mishaps and all the finishing places were sorted with the photo finish camera. Well done to Andy Pollintine (Dulwich Paragon) to claim first place in the melee with junior Henry Latimer (Team Zappi's) in 2nd and Chris Wilkinson (Dulwich Paragon) 3rd.

The WyndyMilla 4th cat. prize is awarded to 39th place finisher Richard Musson – he can look forward to a WyndyMilla ‘go faster’ cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre in Seale.

The 3rd cat race continued for a further 10 minutes and finished with a group sprint, Rob Griffiths (London Pheonix) came 1st over the line followed by Stuart Harvey (Ultimate Fitness) and Rudie Marais returning to form in 3rd place.

photo of Ralph de Kanter

The MaxiFuel prize is awarded to 12th place finisher Ralph de Kanter of Norwood Paragon CC; he receives a Maxifuel pack comprising rucksack with Viperactive energy fuel and gels, bottles and T-shirt.

In the E123 race a class entry lined up with WyndyMilla in force, resplendent in their striking pink kit, Lewis Atkins (Twenty3c–Orbea) fresh from his Ottershaw win and as always a pleasure to see Tony Gibb (Cycle Premier). After 25km the peloton sprang to life with determined efforts from Bill Butterworth (Team Quest) who continually attacked off the front in his usual style. Several promising breaks got clear of the main group but were all brought back. Gibb took a tumble but in style jumped back into the pack practically unnoticed! The group was still together after all the breaks but with 5km to go Lewis Atkins and David Murrell (London Phoenix) got clear, it looked very promising and a gap of 20secs. opened; however, with a big effort from junior Alex Pantelides (Twickenham CC) the gap closed with 300 metres to go. Last year’s series 2nd place overall Jo Skelton (with new team Look Mum No Hands!) saw his chance and with the skill of a sprinter went past Atkins who to his great credit and strength hung on for 2nd place. Alexander King (Endura Racing) showed he has made a good recovery from his knee surgery and finished strongly in 3rd place and should be in a position to help his team in the coming season. Pantelides also benefitted from his efforts to close the gap by taking 4th place ahead of Tom Smith (Felt Colbornes) and Neil Heffernan (Inverse Racing/Cyclaim).

Keep your race number for the entire series - you'll need it next time you race, so don't forget to put it in your kit bag

Starts 4th December be ready!

Racing in the Imperial Winter Series 2009/2010 Alex Dowsett (European Under-23 time trial champion & Commonwealth Games 2010 Time Trial Silver medallist) and Jo Skelton (2nd overall E123 Imperial Winter Series 2009/2010)

We missed you guys over the summer months, but now the temperature is dropping and you’re digging around for the arm warmers at the back of kit drawer or ordering grippy winter tyres then it must be almost time for this season’s Imperial Winter Series.

Here we go again - you can expect our old favourite the classic E123 series, 1 hour plus 5 laps for our experienced riders. Will it be a Sigma Sport hattrick or are they a ‘marked’ club?

We are delighted to announce that we have teamed up with WyndyMilla and Maxifuel to offer some great prizes for the 4ths, 3rds and Ladies races.

3rd & 4th cats
With the success of the 3rd cat series, we will be repeating this event in the same format as before, 50 minutes plus 5 laps. The 4th cats can also look forward to getting some great experience and a prize or two along the way in their 40 minutes plus 5 lap races.

Ladies
We’re happy to announce this year that we are going to hold a Woman’s Mini Series with three events over the Christmas break for E1234’s. Imperial RT are keen to support this growing part of racing and hope you can assist by spreading the word!

WyndyMilla and Maxifuel are both keen to promote these races as providing the basis for experience and stepping stones for progression into the main E123 races, both in the Winter series and onto the road.

Accordingly prizes will be awarded on random finishing place as outlined below:
*4ths – 1 free Bio Bike cyclefit session using the World’s first hydraulic dual SRM fitting system plus Maxifuel bottles
*3rds - Maxifuel product & bottles
*Ladies - Maxitone product & bottles
*In addition, Maxifuel will provide some prizes for the E123 event to recognise the great racing generated by these riders.

Online (the web) entries proved successful for fast tracking at the sign-on table, so thanks to Rider HQ, they will be continuing this option for us again this season.

Ok, have you got all that? Series starts Saturday 4th December, 12 rounds at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, new club house and the usual Imperial Racing Teas will be provided.

Coaching

Again this year, there’s the opportunity to get in some coaching on circuit racing before the racing gets underway. Mark November 20 (it’s a Saturday) in your diary, as Prime Coaching will come to the Hillingdon Circuit for a four-hour (1-5pm) training session on the do’s and don’ts and probably a few ‘cunning tricks to have up your sleeve’ that’ll be sure to have you ready in every way for when the action kicks off. No question, circuit racing can be intense and riding in a fast moving peloton around a technical undulating circuit calls for an understanding of racing etiquette. If circuit racing is new to you, this is a must-attend. Don't forget to register to avoid disappointment.
